CNN Host Responds to Viewer Accusing Him of Defending Trump Cult

On Saturday, CNNs Michael Smerconish addressed a viewer who suggested he was part of President Donald Trumps cult. Smerconish began his program discussing the recent debate surrounding U.S. military actions targeting alleged drug trafficking vessels from Venezuela and other locations.

The host expressed support for strong interdiction measures to prevent drugs from entering the United States, but he questioned the September 2 double strike on a suspected drug smuggling boat near Trinidad. The second strike, launched after two people survived the initial attack, has raised significant legal concerns.

Reports indicate that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth allegedly ordered the elimination of everyone on board, prompting Navy Adm. Frank Mitch Bradley to carry out a follow-up strike, although Bradley denied receiving any kill them all instruction. Smerconish described the legality of the second attack as questionable and urged a thorough investigation.

Later, Smerconish engaged with viewer comments on social media. One viewer, Lisa, accused him of aligning with a Trump cult due to his support for action against foreign drug operations. She wrote, So on the street, you see a drug dealer in plain sight. Are we to shoot them right there in the street? This is the U.S. Board the boat, stop them, get the evidence, show us, wow, I think you are part of a cult now.

Amused, Smerconish replied, No. We are protecting against foreign entities attempting to infiltrate the country with drugs. The rules are different on the high seas than domestically, and less due process is required.

In response to another viewer, he emphasized the importance of deterrence, citing Trump-era border enforcement as evidence of its effectiveness. He noted, Ive seen footage over the years of people rushing across the border. Do you see that happening today? Not really. The deterrent effect works.
