Consideration of banning wild camping on the coast

Authorities are considering prohibiting wild camping and open fires near Whitby Abbey and other popular spots along the Yorkshire coast after a surge in complaints. In August 2024, officials discovered 78 tents or temporary shelters in unauthorised camping locations, costing over 30,000 to clean up, according to North Yorkshire Council.

The council intends to implement a public space protection order that would restrict wild camping and the use of fires in nine key locations, including Scarborough's Peasholm Park, South Cliff, and Marine Drive. A council report stated that these incidents negatively affect the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

The report highlighted that in recent years, unregulated camping and fire-setting have become a significant concern in Whitby and Scarborough. This activity has led to littering, including discarded tents, clothing, food, and sleeping bags, as well as damage to public benches and seating areas. The council noted that there is no reason for wild camping in these locations since a variety of licensed campsites are available.

Areas targeted by the proposed restrictions include Whitby Abbey and Pannett Park in Whitby, as well as several locations in Scarborough, such as Royal Albert Park, Castle Dyke, South Cliff, Italian Gardens, Holbeck, Scalby Beck, Marvels and the Open Air Theatre, Peasholm Park, and Museum Terrace, Crescent, and Valley Park.

The report confirmed that council officers would continue to assist anyone camping due to homelessness through existing housing and rough sleeping support services.

Councillors will review plans to initiate a public consultation regarding the proposed ban, aiming to reduce unauthorised camping and improve the experience for visitors and locals alike.
