On Thursday, President Donald Trump praised his golfing skills, claiming to have won 38 club championships, and insisted all were earned fairly. However, accounts from people who have played with him suggest otherwise.
Trump stated, I understand golf very well. Ive secured 38 club titles and dont get much time to practice, despite spending most weekends on the golf course, a habit that has cost taxpayers approximately $70 million, even as government budgets have been reduced elsewhere.
During a holiday call with U.S. military members, Trump mentioned winning a championship at a major club by defeating a 27-year-old player just last year, though he did not offer further details. He added, Club championships are like our majors, and most people cant compete in them. Were talking no strokes or anything. I have a very low handicap and all 38 of my wins are completely legitimate.
He emphasized the legitimacy of his victories by noting the audience following the events. I am a good golfer, yes, absolutely. I have to be honest about it, he said.
Trump was answering a question from a service member about his golf handicap and the possibility of playing against former President Joe Biden. The president took the opportunity to criticize Bidens skills. Many people talk, but they cant play, like Biden. He cant hit a ball 30 yards. Ive seen his swing, Trump claimed.
Since taking office, Trump has spent 82 days on golf courses he owns, including 29 days at his West Palm Beach course near Mar-a-Lago. He has played golf during economic turmoil caused by tariffs, government shutdowns, and even instead of attending the return of fallen U.S. soldiers.
Despite his frequent play, those who have experienced golf with Trump and other observers dispute his self-assessed prowess. Sportswriter Rick Reilly, who has played with Trump and wrote Commander In Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump, accused him of cheating like a mafia accountant and called his championships as fake as processed cheese.
Reilly stated that Trump has never won a championship at a course he doesnt own. Even at well-regulated courses with judges and cameras, such as Pebble Beach or Tahoe, Trump has never finished in the top half. He only wins when anyone who disputes his win isnt present. Thats how he does it, Reilly explained.
Earlier this year, videos emerged that critics argue show Trump cheating on the course. As a result, many online commentators expressed skepticism about his claim of winning 38 championships legitimately.
Analysis: Trump’s Golf Claims and Public Perception
President Donald Trump’s recent claims about his golfing accomplishments have raised eyebrows, with some questioning the legitimacy of his 38 club championships. While Trump asserts that his victories are “completely legitimate” and earned “fairly,” numerous accounts from people who have played with him suggest otherwise. Trump himself has boasted of his understanding of golf and his low handicap, yet there is a significant gap between his self-assessment and the experiences of others.
In public statements, Trump has emphasized that he won his titles without "strokes" and under fair conditions. However, critics, including sportswriter Rick Reilly, argue that Trump has a history of questionable tactics when it comes to competitions at his own golf courses. Reilly’s claim that Trump has never won a championship at a course he doesn’t own, along with the assertion that Trump wins only when no one is around to challenge him, paints a different picture of the president’s golf abilities.
These claims are compounded by a broader skepticism about Trump’s golfing habits. For example, videos have emerged this year showing moments that critics argue suggest instances of cheating, further diminishing the credibility of his self-proclaimed golfing excellence. This skepticism is amplified by the fact that Trump has never finished in the top half of tournaments at well-regulated courses such as Pebble Beach or Tahoe, which have professional judges and cameras to ensure fair play.
Ultimately, Trump’s statement about his golf championships serves as a reminder of how public figures often shape their personal image through selective narratives. While his golfing prowess is celebrated by some, the doubts raised by his critics highlight the disconnect between perception and reality in the public arena.
