'Daily Show' Criticizes Trump's Ridiculous Building Makeover In A 'Wonderful' Way

On Thursday, "The Daily Show" correspondent Jordan Klepper sharply mocked President Donald Trump after the U.S. Institute of Peace was renamed to honor him. The State Department confirmed the renaming on social media, stating that the new title commemorates "the greatest dealmaker in our nations history." Along with the announcement, the department posted a photo showing Trump's name on the building's exterior. The independent nonprofit, which receives funding from Congress, was originally established by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Klepper reminded viewers that this agency was among the first targeted for closure by the Trump administration earlier this year. "But now it seems hes had a change of heart and wall," Klepper joked, introducing CNN coverage of the renaming.

He also highlighted the absurdity of the makeover, calling it "simply wonderful." Klepper added, "The Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace? I look forward to seeing it next to the Benjamin Netanyahu Bureau of Urban Planning and the RFK Jr. School for Singing."

Segments of Kleppers Thursday monologue are available on The Daily Show.

Analysis: Trump and the Renaming of the U.S. Institute of Peace

The decision to rename the U.S. Institute of Peace in honor of former President Donald Trump has sparked sharp reactions, both in political circles and in media commentary. The State Department's announcement, confirming the renaming and its justification as a tribute to Trump’s “greatness as a dealmaker,” raises significant questions about the role and legacy of the Institute itself. Originally established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, the U.S. Institute of Peace was created to foster conflict resolution and promote peace initiatives around the globe. Its renaming to the "Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace" is seen by some as a politically motivated gesture that contrasts with the agency's original mission.

Comedian Jordan Klepper, a correspondent for "The Daily Show," has notably mocked the renaming. His remarks, which were widely circulated, highlight the contradictions in Trump’s past stance toward the agency, which was one of the first targets for budget cuts and potential closure under his administration earlier this year. Klepper’s sharp wit pointed out the apparent irony, suggesting that Trump’s change of heart on the matter may be more about personal legacy-building than a genuine commitment to peace.

This renaming could potentially be viewed as part of a broader trend where public institutions are either aligned with or repurposed to reflect the personal or political ambitions of the president in office. While Trump's supporters may view this as a deserved recognition of his diplomatic efforts, critics argue it undermines the original intent of such institutions, which are supposed to function independently of partisan influence.

In conclusion, the renaming of the U.S. Institute of Peace under Trump’s presidency invites a broader conversation about the politicization of national institutions. It raises concerns about the enduring impact such decisions may have on the credibility and impartiality of organizations that are meant to serve the public good, rather than bolster political legacies.
