'Daily Show' Reveals the Poetic Justification for Trump's Hernández Pardon

On Wednesday, Josh Johnson from The Daily Show sharply criticized Donald Trumps vague reasoning for pardoning former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernndez, who was convicted last year for his role in smuggling 400 tons of cocaine into the United States. Trump's decision puzzled critics, especially given his administrations strong rhetoric against drug trafficking both domestically and internationally.
When asked on Sunday about pardoning a notorious drug trafficker, Trump initially appeared unaware of whom the reporter meant. Johnson joked, You know youve pardoned too many people when youre like, Im sorry, which notorious drug lord are we talking about? At least give me the first letter, or well be here all night!
Trump then suggested Hernndezs conviction was part of a Biden administration setup, without providing any supporting evidence. Attempting to justify his pardon further, Trump told reporters, You take any country you want. If somebody sells drugs in that country, that doesnt mean you arrest the president and put him in jail for the rest of his life. And that includes this country, OK, to be honest. I mean, if somebody does something wrong, do you put the president of the country in jail?
The audience responded with cheers and applause during the segment. Johnson highlighted Trumps apparent concern about a slippery slope, quipping, Clearly, Trump is worried about a slippery slope here. Its like that classic poem: First, they came for the wildly corrupt presidents, and I said nothing, because that would be admissible in court.
Johnsons full monologue on the topic aired during Wednesdays episode of The Daily Show.
In his latest controversial decision, former President Donald Trump pardoned Juan Orlando Hernández, the former President of Honduras, who was convicted of drug trafficking. The pardon has drawn sharp criticism, particularly from those who point to the irony in Trump’s administration’s harsh stance on drug trafficking. Many are questioning why Trump chose to pardon a figure deeply involved in the narcotics trade.
Trump’s defense of the decision has been vague and unconvincing. When asked about pardoning a "notorious drug trafficker," he seemed unaware of who the reporter was referring to, which drew jokes from The Daily Show's Josh Johnson. This moment highlights a troubling disconnect between Trump's rationale and the public’s understanding of the situation. Moreover, Trump’s claim that Hernández’s conviction was part of a “Biden administration setup” has not been substantiated, leading to further skepticism about his reasoning.
Johnson’s comments, while comedic, point to a deeper concern about consistency in Trump’s decision-making. The former president’s defense of his actions—suggesting that world leaders should not be held accountable for crimes committed under their watch—raises important questions about accountability and the rule of law. Critics argue that such a stance undermines the efforts to combat international drug trafficking and promotes a dangerous precedent for leaders to act with impunity.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it is clear that Trump’s pardon of Hernández is unlikely to quell the growing debate over his approach to justice and international relations. The pardon not only casts a shadow over his legacy but also highlights the complexities surrounding the balance of power and accountability in global governance.
