The FBIs headquarters is reportedly urging its domestic terrorism division to consider a seditious conspiracy inquiry into six Democratic lawmakers who released a video urging active-duty military personnel to uphold their oath to the Constitution and reject unlawful orders, according to Bloomberg.
The video included Senators Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), as well as Representatives Chris Deluzio (D-PA), Maggie Goodlander (D-NH), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), and Jason Crow (D-CO), all with military backgrounds or experience in national security. The release sparked extreme reactions from former President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who have reportedly used the situation to pursue long-standing grievances. Trump even suggested on social media extreme punitive measures against the lawmakers, while Hegseth considered recalling Senator Kelly to active duty to initiate a baseless court-martial.
The Department of Justice and FBI are independently investigating the videos creators. Several targeted Democrats have publicly vowed not to be intimidated. Senator Kelly posted on Twitter that the retaliation campaign is not about us, stating that the effort is an attempt to suppress dissent and disregard constitutional principles.
Slotkin emphasized that harassment tactics have previously been used against private institutions, and she affirmed her commitment to defending the country. Representative Crow echoed these sentiments, highlighting what he described as Trumps politicization of the FBI.
According to sources familiar with the situation, career officials in the FBIs Washington Field Office have resisted initiating a seditious conspiracy probe, citing insufficient legal grounds to pursue a criminal case against the lawmakers who released the November 18 video.
Public Sentiment on Trumps Leadership
Recent Politico polling shows that a significant portion of Americans, including some 2024 Trump voters, attribute the nations affordability crisis to the former president. Nearly half of respondents believe the current cost of living is unprecedented, and 46 percent hold Trump responsible for the economic challenges.
GAO Investigation into Federal Housing Finance Agency
The Government Accountability Office has reportedly launched an inquiry into Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte following a request from Senate Democrats. Senators including Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Dick Durbin (D-IL) asked the GAO to examine Pultes recent referrals of high-profile officials to the Department of Justice for mortgage fraud.
A GAO spokesperson confirmed acceptance of the request and explained that the agency is first determining the investigations scope and methodology, a process that may take several months before a completion timeline can be provided.
Author’s Analysis: Political Pressure and Institutional Boundaries
The recent developments surrounding the FBI’s consideration of a seditious conspiracy inquiry into six Democratic lawmakers highlight the tension between political pressures and institutional norms. The lawmakers, all with military or national security experience, released a video urging service members to uphold constitutional duties, which has provoked extreme reactions from former President Trump and others.
Sources indicate that career officials in the FBI’s Washington Field Office are hesitant to pursue a criminal case, citing insufficient legal grounds. This internal resistance suggests that, despite political calls for action, established legal standards remain a critical check on potential overreach.
Public reaction to these events occurs against a backdrop of broader political discontent. Recent polling shows that significant segments of the population, including some Trump supporters, associate economic challenges with Trump’s leadership, reflecting ongoing partisan polarization. Meanwhile, congressional oversight continues through the GAO’s investigation into the Federal Housing Finance Agency, demonstrating that institutional accountability mechanisms remain active even amid political controversies.
Overall, the situation underscores a critical balancing act: maintaining rule-of-law standards within federal institutions while navigating politically charged environments. The law enforcement and oversight bodies involved appear to be exercising caution to prevent politically motivated prosecutions, reinforcing the separation of powers and the protections afforded to elected officials under U.S. law.
