Recently, after a group of Democratic military veterans encouraged service members to refuse unlawful orders, the White House launched a strong counter-effort that drew intense scrutiny. Former President Donald Trump amplified the controversy, claiming the lawmakers actions amounted to SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH! Despite the initial uproar losing some momentum amid broader news on war crime allegations, the administration continues to pursue the matter through multiple channels.
At the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has maintained pressure on Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, employing tactics that even some Republican lawmakers have criticized. Concurrently, the president used social media to call for probes into political opponents.
Of particular note are developments within federal law enforcement. Reports indicate that FBI and Justice Department officials reached out to the U.S. Capitol Police to coordinate interviews with the six Democratic lawmakers involved. Each lawmaker confirmed contact from the House and Senate sergeants at arms acting on behalf of the FBI.
According to Bloomberg Law, which cited sources familiar with the matter, FBI leadership is pushing domestic terrorism agents to launch a seditious conspiracy investigation into the Democrats who advised service members to follow legal orders. However, career officials at the bureaus Washington Field Office have resisted, arguing there is no legal or factual basis to pursue criminal charges against the lawmakers who posted a November 18 video reminding service members of their rights to refuse unlawful directives.
The report further noted that FBI headquarters wants the probe to fall under the rarely used seditious conspiracy statute, the same law applied to convict a small number of Oath Keepers and Proud Boys leaders for their roles in the January 6 Capitol riot. The bureau has not publicly commented on these developments.
If accurate, these actions would equate the lawmakers lawful guidance to military personnel with the violent insurrection carried out on January 6. The controversy arises amid a backdrop of recent firings within the FBI of officials perceived as insufficiently aligned with Trump-aligned priorities.
Observers are closely monitoring how the investigation unfolds and whether the internal tensions within the FBI will influence the outcome.
