DOJ unable to obtain new indictment of James from grand jury

The Justice Department was unable to secure a new indictment against New York Attorney General Letitia James after its earlier case was dismissed, marking a significant setback for federal prosecutors focused on one of President Trumps most prominent critics.

Officials attempted to move forward with new charges following the dismissal, which came after a judge ruled that the appointment of Lindsey Halligan as acting U.S. attorney was unlawful. Despite assembling a new team of prosecutors, the grand jury declined to reindict James.

Jamess attorney Abbe Lowell said the grand jurys decision represents a clear rejection of a case that should never have been brought. He emphasized that both the courts dismissal and the grand jurys response should bring the matter to a close.

The original indictment involved allegations that James misrepresented details of a Virginia property to secure favorable loan terms, which prosecutors argued could have saved her nearly $19,000. She had faced bank fraud and false statement charges, accusations she has consistently denied, asserting she is being targeted for political reasons.

James reiterated that the accusations were baseless and thanked the grand jury for declining the renewed effort to prosecute her. She has maintained that the investigation represents an improper use of the justice system for political retaliation connected to her legal actions against Trumps business interests.

The earlier dismissal also halted proceedings against former FBI Director James Comey. While prosecutors have been given the option to revisit both cases, complications surrounding Comeys legal timelines and new litigation tied to his former counsel may obstruct any renewed attempts.

The Justice Department is reportedly still weighing its options regarding potential further action, but both James and Comey have continued to assert their innocence and denounce the investigations as politically motivated.
