Former President Donald Trump, 79, angrily referred to a female journalist as a stupid person when questioned about the suspect involved in the recent shootings in Washington, D.C. The exchange took place after Trumps Thanksgiving call with U.S. service members, during which he confirmed the death of Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom.
Speaking from Mar-a-Lago, Trump reacted with visible frustration when asked about the accused shooter, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan who has resided in Washington since 2021. CNN reported that Lakanwal had applied for asylum in 2024 and had it approved under the Trump administration in April 2025.
The reporter highlighted that the suspect had long collaborated with the CIA in Afghanistan and had been vetted prior to entering the U.S. Trump dismissed these points, stating, He went cuckoo, he went nuts, and that happens too, and added that there was no vetting or anything. They came in unvetted, and we have a lot of others in this country were gonna get them out, but they go cuckoo.
When the journalist pressed Trump on the Department of Justice and DHS vetting of Afghan arrivals, referencing a June report by the Inspector General titled Audit of the FBIs Participation in the Handling of Afghan Evacuees During Operation Allies Refuge and Operation Allies Welcome, Trump shifted blame to the Biden administration. Because they let them in. Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person? Because they came in on a plane, along with thousands of others that shouldnt be here, and youre just asking questions, because youre a stupid person, Trump said, repeating the insult three times.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson defended the remark, saying, President Trump has never been politically correct, never holds back, and in large part, the American people re-elected him for his transparency. This has nothing to do with gender it has everything to do with the fact that the Presidents and the publics trust in the media is at an all-time low.
The official White House RapidResponse 47 X account shared the confrontation, labeling it as FAKE NEWS and posting Trumps quote in full. At the close of the conference, NewsNation reporter Libbey Dean asked whether the suspect had actually received asylum during Trumps presidency. Trump responded, When it comes to asylum, when theyre flown in its very hard to get them out, no matter how you want to do its very hard to get them out, but were going to be getting them all out.
Trump also speculated on the suspects motive, calling it a terrorism threat and suggesting it could be related to the effectiveness of the National Guard in Washington. He described the act as horrible but offered a theory that the suspect may have been frustrated at being unable to commit crimes.
This incident is part of a recent pattern of Trump targeting female journalists. Earlier this month, he called Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucy piggy when asked about the Epstein files, and recently, he criticized New York Times correspondent Katie Rogers on social media, calling her ugly, both inside and out after a story about his reduced workload in his second term.
Analysis of Trump's Remarks on Female Journalist's Question
In an increasingly polarized political climate, the recent exchange between former President Donald Trump and a female journalist highlights not only his combative style but also the tension surrounding the media's role in reporting sensitive topics like the suspect in the Washington, D.C. shootings. Trump's reaction to the reporter's inquiry about the asylum status of Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the accused shooter, was marked by visible frustration and an insulting comment directed at the journalist. Trump's response, which dismissed the significance of vetting and asylum processes, sheds light on his continued focus on immigration and his tendency to downplay factual details when they do not align with his narrative.
This incident reflects a broader trend in Trump’s rhetoric, particularly when dealing with questions he perceives as critical or challenging. His comments to the journalist—calling her "stupid" repeatedly—serve as an attempt to deflect scrutiny and undermine media credibility. The White House’s defense of Trump’s remarks, claiming they had nothing to do with gender but rather the public's lack of trust in the media, illustrates the deep divide between the former president and the press. While Trump may believe that his blunt approach resonates with his base, this incident adds to the ongoing controversy over his treatment of journalists, particularly women, and raises questions about the limits of public discourse.
The broader implications of this exchange are twofold: it highlights Trump's ongoing criticism of media institutions and amplifies the discussion about the effectiveness of vetting processes for Afghan evacuees during his administration. Trump's repeated dismissal of the vetting process, particularly with respect to Lakanwal, contradicts reports indicating that thorough checks were carried out by the Department of Justice and Homeland Security. Such contradictions, especially when coupled with inflammatory remarks, complicate public understanding of the actual facts surrounding the case.
In conclusion, this incident underscores a continuing pattern of combative interactions between Trump and the press, especially when discussing sensitive national security issues. It also further intensifies the debate over the vetting and immigration processes put in place during his presidency. As the political climate continues to evolve, such exchanges will likely remain a point of contention, influencing public perception of both Trump’s legacy and the role of the media in holding public figures accountable.
