Perus Ex-Leader Receives Prison Term for 2022 Rebellion Plot

LIMA, Peru Pedro Castillo, the former President of Peru, has been sentenced to 11.5 years in prison by the Supreme Court for conspiring to incite a rebellion in 2022, during his attempt to dissolve Congress while facing imminent impeachment. In addition, a special panel of the court has prohibited the 56-year-old former leader from holding public office for two years. Castillo has been detained since his arrest in December 2022.

Two former ministers from Castillos administration were also handed 11.5-year prison sentences for the same charges. Among them is former Prime Minister Betssy Chvez, who has sought asylum at the Mexican embassy in Lima, where she continues to reside. The Peruvian government responded by cutting diplomatic ties with Mexico over her asylum.

Both Castillo and his ex-ministers retain the right to appeal the courts ruling.

This development comes shortly after another former Peruvian president, Martn Vizcarra, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for bribery committed during his tenure as governor of a southern state.

Pedro Castillo, who took office in 2021, became the first Peruvian president from a humble farming background. His presidency ended when Vice President Dina Boluarte assumed office, though she was later removed amid public dissatisfaction and rising crime.
