WASHINGTON The recent shooting of two West Virginia National Guard members in Washington, DC, has raised numerous questions. Authorities have identified the suspect as an Afghan national, while providing limited details about the Guard members, one of whom has died. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
Victims and Their Backgrounds
President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday that Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries. Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remained in critical condition, according to West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey. Both were deployed to Washington as part of a mission intended to support law enforcement operations in the capital.
Beckstrom, from Summersville, West Virginia, had been serving in Washington since August. She joined the National Guard immediately after graduating from Webster County High School in June 2023. The Guard praised her dedication, noting that she served with distinction as a military police officer.
Wolfe, a Martinsburg native, enlisted in February 2019 after graduating from Musselman High School. School officials described him as a high-achieving student who contributed actively to both academic and athletic programs.
The Shooting Incident
The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, traveled from Washington state to carry out what authorities described as an ambush-style attack using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver. Surveillance footage showed him opening fire immediately upon turning a corner. Service members subdued the assailant, who was taken into custody. Officials believe he acted alone, and it is unclear who fired the shots that wounded him. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Suspect Background
Lakanwal, 29, entered the U.S. in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden-era program that resettled thousands of Afghans after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He applied for asylum during the Biden administration, but it was approved under the Trump administration. The initiative relocated around 76,000 people, many of whom had worked with U.S. military and diplomatic missions in Afghanistan.
Before coming to the U.S., Lakanwal served in Afghanistan with a special army unit known as Zero Units, which worked with CIA-backed paramilitary operations. Reports indicate he began as a security guard in 2012 and later became a team leader and GPS specialist. He lived in Washington state with his wife and five children prior to the incident.
Legal Proceedings
Lakanwal now faces charges including first-degree murder, three counts of possessing a firearm during a violent crime, and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. Additional charges are expected. Officials have not disclosed a motive.
National Guard Deployment
Following the shooting, President Trump announced plans to send an additional 500 National Guard troops to Washington. Currently, nearly 2,200 Guard members from multiple states are deployed in the city, with D.C. alone hosting 949 members. States including Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama have contributed personnel. A federal judge recently ordered the end of the Guard deployment but delayed enforcement for 21 days to allow for administrative adjustments.
Author’s Analysis: National Guard Shooting in Washington
The attack on two West Virginia National Guard members highlights both operational risks and gaps in information regarding deployed service personnel. Specialist Sarah Beckstrom’s death and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe’s critical condition underscore the human cost, while authorities continue to withhold the suspect’s motive.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal’s background as an Afghan national resettled under Operation Allies Welcome adds complexity to the case. His prior military experience and relocation history are confirmed, but there is no evidence linking his past service to the attack, and investigators have not clarified why he targeted the Guard members.
Legally, Lakanwal faces multiple serious charges, including first-degree murder. The case will likely involve detailed examination of his actions and intentions. Meanwhile, the federal response has included deploying additional National Guard personnel to Washington, highlighting ongoing security concerns in the capital.
For policymakers and the public, this incident reinforces the challenges of balancing rapid troop deployment with civilian safety. The investigation’s outcome may influence future deployment strategies and background vetting procedures for both military and resettled personnel.
