The FBI is being described as a rudderless ship under the leadership of Director Kash Patel, with both active-duty and retired agents saying he appears in over his head. This assessment comes from a report by 24 experienced agents, which is scheduled to be submitted to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees later this week. The report evaluates Patel's first six months in office.

The report, obtained by the New York Post, arrives after Patel has come under scrutiny for using government aircraft for personal trips, deploying a SWAT team to protect his girlfriend, and conflicts with senior administration officials. The White House dismissed claims that Patels position was precarious, but FBI insiders portrayed a troubling picture of a chronically underperforming agency struggling with low confidence in its leadership due to Patels limited experience.

One agent labeled the leadership the Kash-Bongino circus, while another criticized Patel for creating paralyzing leadership at all levels. Special agents, some with decades of experience, said Patel lacks the breadth of experience and the demeanor necessary for an FBI director, while Deputy Director Dan Bongino was described as something of a clown.

Patel has not publicly responded to the reports claims. Bongino dismissed the criticisms as gossipy nonsense, stating that discontented staff were resisting reforms and leaking to media outlets with their own agendas. A LOT of people are very upset at the changes and reforms weve made at the FBI, Bongino wrote on X, emphasizing the agencys progress under their leadership.

The report also criticized the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case by Attorney General Pam Bondi and the FBI. A special agent, identified as ALPHA 52, said mismanagement of the file release caused significant reputational damage to the agency. Some agents were temporarily reassigned to redact documents only for the release to be halted by Trump and Bondi.

While Patel was described as personable and likeable, the report claims he has fostered a culture of mistrust and uncertainty. Critics cited his tendency to make premature public statements during ongoing investigations. One anecdote described Patel refusing to leave a plane in Provo, Utah, following the assassination of Charlie Kirk because he did not have an FBI raid jacket of his own. FBI personnel had to find a jacket and attach patches before Patel would disembark.

White House officials have denied reports suggesting Patel might be removed from his position. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called rumors of his firing completely made up, posting a photo of the President and Patel together, signaling confidence in his leadership.

Analysis: Early Challenges Under Director Kash Patel

The recent report from 24 active-duty and retired FBI agents paints a stark picture of the agency's state under Director Kash Patel. According to the insiders, Patel’s first six months have been marked by low confidence in leadership and operational disruption, with concerns about his experience and decision-making style.

Specific incidents cited include the use of government aircraft for personal travel, deployment of a SWAT team for personal security, and public statements that may have interfered with ongoing investigations. Agents describe these actions as contributing to a "culture of mistrust and uncertainty" within the Bureau.

Deputy Director Dan Bongino, meanwhile, is criticized for creating paralyzing leadership structures and for a public persona seen as distracting. Critics argue this combination has undermined morale and the agency's overall effectiveness, even as the White House maintains that the leadership remains strong and reforms are underway.

The report also highlights past controversies, such as the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, pointing to mismanagement of document releases and temporary staff reassignments that caused reputational harm. While Patel is described as personable, insiders say his lack of breadth in experience may limit his capacity to steer the agency through these challenges effectively.
