FBI arrests suspect in Jan. 6 pipe bomb incident at DNC, GOP headquarters

The FBI has apprehended a suspect in the nearly five-year-old investigation into the placement of pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican national committee offices on the eve of January 6, 2021. This arrest represents the first breakthrough in the case, which had stalled for years due to difficulties identifying the individual, whose face was mostly obscured in surveillance footage showing them placing the explosives near both party headquarters.

Authorities have not disclosed further details about the suspect. The devices were quickly rendered safe after discovery, but their presence caused a major police response on the morning of January 6, just before the Capitol riot unfolded.

Surveillance photos and videos captured a figure moving in the shadows, wearing a hoodie and face mask. Despite extensive media coverage, the suspect remained unidentified for years, leaving even basic questions such as their gender unanswered. In an effort to obtain leads, the FBI previously released additional information, estimating the suspects height at around 57.

The prolonged delay in making an arrest drew criticism from Republican lawmakers and fueled conspiracy theories, with some suggesting the investigations slow progress was part of a cover-up.
