During a Thursday press briefing, FBI Director Kash Patel, appointed by a president who later pardoned numerous individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riot, asserted that the Trump administration will always oppose and counter any attacks on the nations Capitol.
The press conference focused on the arrest of Brian Cole, a Virginia resident accused of placing pipe bombs at both the Republican and Democratic National Committee offices on the evening of January 5, 2021, just hours before pro-Trump demonstrators stormed the Capitol to block the certification of the 2020 Electoral College results. Fortunately, the explosives were discovered before detonation, and no injuries occurred, but the investigation into Coles actions has been ongoing for years.
On his second day in office, former President Trump issued pardons and clemency to nearly 1,600 individuals involved in the Capitol riot, including those charged with assaults on law enforcement officers. Some of the pardoned individuals have since faced additional criminal charges, and one was fatally shot by police weeks after receiving clemency.
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that Cole was charged under 18 U.S.C. 844 for using an explosive device and noted that further charges may be forthcoming. She introduced Patel, who emphasized, When you threaten American citizens or our legislative institutions, when you attack our nations Capitol, you challenge the foundation of our way of life. The FBI and the Department of Justice are committed to always countering such threats and ensuring the safety of the nation under President Trumps leadership.
Patel praised the dedicated members of the FBI, the Capitol Police, and Metropolitan Police Department, along with DOJ prosecutors for their role in securing Coles arrest. He highlighted the careful investigative work and coordination required to safely apprehend him without endangering law enforcement personnel.
Patel further stressed, This FBI will never allow law enforcement or prosecutors to be jeopardized. This operation showcased exceptional teamwork, resilience, and traditional police work executed flawlessly.
Despite Patels remarks, law enforcement officers were indeed placed in grave danger during the January 6 attack. Approximately 140 officers were injured, with fifteen hospitalized, suffering injuries ranging from concussions and spinal damage to respiratory issues and heart problems. Officer Brian Sicknick died hours after being pepper-sprayed, with the medical examiner citing natural causes influenced by the riot. At least four officers later died by suicide, and countless others continue to face mental health challenges, including PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
While Trumps pardons prevented further prosecution of some rioters, they did not alter the extensive documentation of the events, including photos, videos, body camera footage, and court testimony detailing assaults on law enforcement. Over 172 defendants admitted to assaulting officers, and hundreds more were convicted of related crimes.
Patel concluded, When law enforcement is allowed to do its job, these outcomes are possible, undersporing the ongoing work to address threats to the Capitol.
