A recent report sheds light on several concerns within the FBI during the leadership of Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, according to the New York Post. The 115-page document includes feedback from both active and retired FBI personnel, with one source characterizing the bureau as a rudderless ship under Patels first year in charge.
Questions About Experience and Priorities
The report examines FBI operations from February 21 to August 21, covering the first six months of Patels term. Sources describe Patel as in over his head, while Bongino was called something of a clown. Patel, who previously served as principal deputy director of national intelligence and chief of staff to former acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller under President Trump, was described as lacking experience. Critics noted he does not have the necessary experience or the measured self-confidence required for the role. Both Patel and Bongino were also criticized for devoting excessive time to social media and public relations efforts.
Incident in Utah After Charlie Kirk Shooting
One point of concern highlighted Patels conduct following the September 10 fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Orem, Utah. Upon arriving in Provo the day after the incident, Patel reportedly refused to leave the FBI jet without an official bureau jacket. FBI agents at the Salt Lake City field office provided him a medium-sized jacket belonging to a female agent. Patel then pointed out that two areas on the upper sleeves did not have Velcro patches attached, which were subsequently given to him by two FBI SWAT members at the airport.
The report also claims Patel made premature public statements during the investigation and took credit for actions of other agencies after the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was apprehended. Additionally, he allegedly shouted at Robert Bohls, the FBI special agent in charge, amid frustrations over the investigation.
Next Steps and Responses
The report is scheduled for review by the Senate and House Judiciary committees later this week. The Hill contacted the offices of committee chairs Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for comment. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) stated on social media, criticizing Patels focus on appearances rather than addressing domestic terrorism. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson, however, affirmed that Patel is a critical member of the Presidents team working diligently to restore integrity to the FBI. The Hill has also reached out to the FBI for comment.
Analysis: FBI's Internal Struggles Under Patel and Bongino
The recent report on the FBI's operations during the leadership of Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino highlights significant concerns regarding their management style and effectiveness. According to feedback from both active and retired personnel, the agency faced difficulties under Patel's leadership, particularly in his first year as Director. Described as a "rudderless ship," the FBI reportedly lacked clear direction, with some sources questioning Patel's experience and leadership capabilities.
Patel, who lacked experience in the law enforcement sector and had previously served in intelligence and defense roles, was criticized for not having the "measured self-confidence" required for the Director's position. The report suggests that both Patel and Bongino focused more on media presence and public relations, rather than the core responsibilities of running the FBI. This diversion of attention, combined with a lack of experience, contributed to internal disarray and frustration among agents.
One notable incident that raised eyebrows was Patel's behavior following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah. Patel's actions, including his refusal to leave an FBI jet without a specific jacket and his premature public statements during the investigation, further highlighted concerns about his leadership approach. Additionally, his reported outburst at FBI special agent Robert Bohls raised questions about his professionalism in high-pressure situations.
The upcoming reviews by the Senate and House Judiciary committees may provide further insights into the internal dynamics of the FBI during this tumultuous period. While some lawmakers, such as Rep. Eric Swalwell, have criticized Patel's focus on appearances, the White House has defended his role, calling him a "critical member" of the President's team. As the FBI continues to grapple with these internal challenges, it remains to be seen how this leadership phase will impact the agency's future direction.
