Thursday morning in a quiet Woodbridge, Virginia neighborhood was shattered by the sudden arrival of sirens, two Humvee-style vehicles, and armed law enforcement in tactical gear surrounding a house. A voice over a loudspeaker announced, This is the FBI. We have a federal search warrant. Come out with your hands up.
The operation led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man living with his parents, ending a nearly five-year investigation into the placement of pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, DC, on January 5, 2021, the day before the Capitol riot.
During the investigation, authorities reviewed around 39,000 video files, conducted more than 1,000 interviews, and received over 600 tips. The reward for information on the suspect increased over time, from $50,000 to $500,000.
Brian Cole Jr. has been charged federally with constructing and placing the pipe bombs. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in DC. Officials confirmed that the investigation continues with additional search warrants being executed.
Neighbors described Cole as reclusive, often walking his small dog while wearing headphones. Some noted his unusual habit of wearing shorts and red Crocs in any weather.
Investigation Breakthrough
Officials said investigators finally focused on Cole using a combination of existing surveillance footage, cell phone location data, and records of purchases for bomb-making materials. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized that the arrest resulted from diligent investigation rather than new tips or witnesses.
Over the years, several persons of interest came and went. Cole became the main suspect only in recent weeks. The pipe bombs were overshadowed by the violent events at the Capitol on January 6.
Pipe Bomb Placement
One pipe bomb was placed outside the DNC headquarters and another behind the RNC building between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. on January 5, 2021. The bombs were discovered the following afternoon, requiring police to divert resources from the nearby Capitol complex as the riot unfolded.
The FBI confirmed that the bombs were functional and could have caused serious harm. Then Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was reportedly within 20 feet of the DNC device.
Surveillance and Evidence
Surveillance footage showed a single individual placing both bombs, wearing dark pants, a gray hoodie, dark gloves, a face mask, and distinctive black and gray Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers with a yellow logo, of which fewer than 25,000 pairs had been sold at the time. The suspects glasses and approximate height of 5-foot-7 were also noted, matching Coles appearance.
Purchase Records and Location Data
The criminal affidavit against Cole highlighted his purchases of bomb-making materials from stores including Home Depot, Walmart, Lowes, and Micro Center in 2019 and 2020. Items included pipes, end caps, wiring, batteries, timers, steel wool, safety glasses, and wire-stripping tools.
The FBI cross-referenced these purchases with cell phone location records, which placed Cole near the RNC and DNC on the night of January 5, 2021. Additionally, his 2017 Nissan Sentra was recorded passing a license plate reader less than half a mile from the scene.
Focus on a Cold Case
Trump administration officials credited their renewed focus for solving the case, claiming it had received insufficient attention previously. FBI officials noted that new expert teams were brought in to review the evidence meticulously, ultimately leading to Coles identification and arrest.
FBI officials stressed that the case never stopped being investigated. Andrew McCabe, former FBI deputy director, noted that fresh perspectives on existing evidence often reveal new leads, which played a critical role in resolving this nearly five-year-old case.
