Nearly five years after the events of January 6, 2021, federal investigators arrested a man from Virginia on suspicion of leaving two pipe bombs in Washington, D.C. Court documents state that Brian Cole Jr. has been charged with transporting an explosive device with intent to cause harm, along with a separate charge related to attempted destruction involving fire and explosive materials.
According to an affidavit filed by an FBI agent, Cole purchased various items believed to have been used in constructing the devices. These materials reportedly included certain electronic components and other parts capable of being assembled into explosive mechanisms. The charging document described the substance used as homemade black powder.
Although neither of the devices detonated, their locations drew significant alarm. One was discovered near the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, while the other was found close to the Republican National Committee. As a result, law enforcement officers responding to the unrest at the U.S. Capitol were diverted to handle the potential threat posed by the devices.
Investigators allege that Cole traveled to Washington, D.C. on the evening of January 5. License plate data recorded his vehicle leaving a highway exit near the Capitol Hill area at approximately 7:10 p.m. Later that evening, cell phone tower records placed his device in the vicinity of the two political party offices over a span of about 45 minutes.
Officials have released little information regarding Coles personal beliefs or any possible motive. When asked during a press conference whether the act was politically driven, Attorney General Pam Bondi declined to comment on the matter. She emphasized, however, that the incident was especially serious because it took place in the nations capital.
For an extended period, investigators reviewed surveillance images of a suspects clothing, including a specific model of athletic shoe. While these shoes were mentioned in the affidavit, there was no direct evidence presented that Cole had purchased them. Authorities continued to monitor his activity both before and after January 6, including a purchase he allegedly made at a restaurant on Capitol Hill in mid-December 2020.
After the January 6 events, Cole is said to have obtained additional items that could potentially be used in the assembly of explosive devices. Previous reporting indicated that cell tower data played an important role in advancing the investigation.
