Jennifer Griffin, Fox News Chief National Security Correspondent, detailed the Pentagon Inspector Generals investigation into Pete Hegseths use of the Signal messaging app for sensitive military communications, describing the report as explosive.
Breaking the story on Wednesday, Griffin explained that the report has now been delivered to Capitol Hill. Sources familiar with the Inspector Generals findings, referred to as the SignalGate investigation, indicate that the Pentagon Acting Inspector General determined Hegseth created risk to operational security during his communications.
Griffin noted that Hegseth shared operational specifics on Signal before missions were completed, which could have jeopardized U.S. mission objectives and endangered pilots. The Pentagon has been contacted for comment, and an unclassified version of the report is expected to be released on Thursday.
The events under review date back to March, when Hegseth allegedly shared sensitive attack plans, including flight schedules, platforms involved, and timing of strikes. Participants in the Signal chain included then-National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, Hegseths family members, and journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic.
At the time, Hegseth defended his actions regarding the Signal messages, stating the communications were informal and unclassified, intended for media coordination. Griffin emphasized the contradiction between Hegseths explanation and the IG reports findings.
Screenshots obtained by The Atlantic from the Signal conversation reportedly show updates such as: Team update, time now, 11:44 Eastern. Weather is favorable. Just confirmed with CENTCOM. We are a go for mission launch. 12:15 Eastern Standard. F-18s launch first strike package, 1:45. Trigger-based F-18 first strike window starts. Target terrorist is at his known location, should also be on time. Also, strike drones launch. The messages included precise strike times, platforms, and operational notes, with Hegseth writing, We are currently clean on OPSEC.
Griffin highlighted that these revelations coincide with upcoming classified congressional hearings featuring Admiral Mitch Bradley, connected to strikes on Caribbean drug boats, raising questions about the legality of those operations due to survivors found on wreckage. The hearings are scheduled to begin the same day the Inspector Generals report is presented to Congress.
Analysis: The SignalGate Investigation and its Implications for National Security
The Pentagon's Inspector General's investigation into Pete Hegseth's use of the Signal messaging app has raised serious concerns regarding operational security and the protection of classified military information. The report, now in the hands of Congress, describes a potential security breach that could have put U.S. mission objectives and personnel at risk.
The revelations surrounding Hegseth’s communications, especially the sharing of sensitive military details before mission completion, underscore a critical issue: the vulnerability of operational security when sensitive data is shared through unsecured channels, even with informal intentions. While Hegseth maintained that his messages were informal and not classified, the findings of the IG report suggest otherwise. The timing and specificity of the shared information — including flight schedules, platforms involved, and strike timings — contradict his defense and suggest that these actions created unnecessary risks for U.S. operations.
Moreover, the context surrounding these communications is troubling. The involvement of high-level officials like former National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, along with Hegseth's family and journalist Jeffrey Goldberg, raises further questions about the appropriateness of such sensitive exchanges on a platform like Signal, which is designed for encrypted communication but still vulnerable to leaks and misuse. This highlights the importance of ensuring that military personnel adhere to strict communication protocols, especially when dealing with national security matters.
As the Inspector General’s report is set to be released in an unclassified form, it will be crucial for Congress to carefully scrutinize these findings. It is particularly concerning that these communications coincided with classified hearings regarding other military operations, such as the strikes on Caribbean drug boats, which are now under legal review due to survivors found among the wreckage. The timing of these events, coupled with the sensitive nature of the information involved, points to the need for heightened vigilance and stronger safeguards to prevent similar breaches in the future.
