California Governor Gavin Newsom believes that Democrats need to temper some of their cultural stances if they hope to attract a wider voter base. Speaking at The New York Times DealBook Summit on Wednesday, Newsom stated, Theres a broader narrative we need to confront. We must appear more culturally mainstream and less judgmental.
While Newsom did not clarify exactly what he meant by culturally mainstream, he has recently criticized aspects of what he calls woke culture.
During the launch of his podcast, This Is Gavin Newsom, he questioned the practice of including pronouns in introductions and ridiculed the term Latinx, despite having used it himself in the past. He also expressed that it was deeply unfair for trans women and girls to compete in womens sports, a stance that drew criticism given his prior support for LGBTQ+ rights and marriage equality.
Beyond cultural issues, Newsom suggested that Democrats are disconnected from voters on other key topics, including immigration, inflation, and their unwavering support for Israel. He emphasized that for the party to regain momentum, it must present Americans with a compelling economic vision, asserting that if we dont democratize our economy, were not going to save democracy.
