GOP receives grim midterm warning from Trump's favorite pollster

Donald Trumps favored pollster is issuing a stark warning to the GOP. Recent data from McLaughlin and Associates indicates that Republicans are losing critical support among independent voters, a trend that could jeopardize the partys efforts to retain control of both the House and Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.
In an article for Newsmax, John McLaughlin, who is polling for Trumps 2024 campaign, along with his brother Jim, described the political climate as increasingly difficult for Republicans as the 2026 midterms approach.
According to the survey, Democrats now lead the generic congressional ballot 45% to 44%, marking the first instance of their advantage in McLaughlins tracking since the 2024 election. Every major pollster monitored by The New York Times currently forecasts a Democratic gain in Congress next year.
The survey, conducted with 1,000 Americans this month, found Democrats pulling ahead in key swing groups they had previously lost to Republicans. Specifically, independents favor Democrats 42% to 26%, Hispanics 48% to 36%, suburban voters 46% to 43%, and women 50% to 38%.
Economic concerns may be influencing voter preferences. The McLaughlin poll shows that 49% of participants believe the U.S. is not in a recession, a decline from 58% in August. Additionally, 41% reported financial struggles in their households.
The slim Republican majority in Congress adds to the stakes. The House currently has 219 Republicans, 213 Democrats, and three vacancies, while the Senate stands at 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and two Independents who caucus with Democrats. Even minor shifts could threaten GOP control.
Despite the challenges, the McLaughlin brothers believe the party still has an opportunity to recover. They noted, If Republicans need approximately 60 million votes in 2026 to regain the House, there are sufficient Trump supporters to achieve it. However, as of 2025, the 75 million Harris voters appear more motivated. That momentum must be countered, and there is still time to do so.
Analysis: Rising Risks for Republicans Ahead of 2026 Midterms
The latest McLaughlin and Associates poll highlights a notable shift in voter sentiment that could complicate Republican efforts to maintain Congressional control. Independent voters, a critical swing group, are showing increased support for Democrats, with a 42% to 26% advantage. Suburban voters, women, and Hispanic voters also lean toward Democrats, signaling broader demographic challenges for the GOP.
Economic perceptions appear to influence these trends. Fewer Americans now believe the country is free from recession, and 41% report financial struggles at home. These concerns may be eroding Republican support in key constituencies, contributing to the slim margins that currently define control in both the House and Senate.
Despite these obstacles, the McLaughlin pollsters emphasize that recovery is possible. With a highly motivated base of Trump supporters, the Republican Party could still mobilize sufficient votes to retain the House. Yet, Democratic momentum, particularly among Harris voters, presents a significant hurdle that the GOP must address before the 2026 midterms.
