A federal grand jury in Virginia has opted not to pursue new charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James, sources familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported. This decision marks another setback for the Trump administration in its efforts to initiate criminal cases against political opponents.
The proposed indictment concerned allegations that James had falsified mortgage documents tied to a property in the Norfolk, Virginia area. This is the second recent attempt to bring legal action against her that has failed.
Previously, U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie dismissed the case, along with separate charges against former FBI Director James Comey, citing the illegal appointment of the lead prosecutor who had been personally selected by former President Trump to handle both cases.
The Justice Department may consider pursuing another attempt to indict James in the future.
Analysis: Federal Grand Jury Decision on Letitia James
The recent decision by a federal grand jury in Virginia not to pursue new charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James underscores continued challenges for the Trump administration in pursuing legal actions against political opponents. Sources indicate that this development is part of a broader pattern of unsuccessful attempts to bring criminal cases against her.
The allegations involved claims that James falsified mortgage documents related to a Norfolk, Virginia property. This marks the second instance in which legal proceedings against her have failed, following the dismissal by U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie. Judge Currie cited the illegal appointment of the lead prosecutor, who had been personally selected by former President Trump, as a key reason for dismissing both her case and the case against former FBI Director James Comey.
While the Justice Department has the option to pursue further action, the repeated setbacks suggest significant procedural and legal obstacles. The decision highlights the importance of proper prosecutorial appointment and adherence to legal standards in politically sensitive cases.
