Grand jury denies Trump's request to re-indict NY AG Letitia James

Dec. 5 A federal grand jury in Norfolk, Virginia, has dismissed the Justice Department's request to re-indict New York Attorney General Letitia James, dealing a significant setback to former President Donald Trump's efforts to pursue legal action against political adversaries.

The decision comes shortly after a federal judge dismissed criminal charges previously filed against James and former FBI Director James Comey. Abbe Lowell, the lead attorney representing James, described the grand jury's refusal as a clear rejection of a case that "should never have existed."

James had previously won a high-profile civil lawsuit against Trump, which revealed extensive financial fraud, including inflated asset values to secure favorable loans and insurance terms.

Trump, since returning to the presidency, has pursued legal action against individuals and entities connected to critics and opponents. One such effort involved a criminal mortgage fraud case against James. In October, a grand jury indicted her for allegedly misrepresenting a Norfolk property purchased in 2020 as her primary residence to obtain advantageous mortgage terms. That indictment was later invalidated by U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie of South Carolina, citing the unlawful appointment of interim attorney Lindsey Halligan.

Halligan, a White House aide with no prosecutorial experience, was installed by Trump after the prior interim U.S. attorney, Erik Siebert, resigned amid concerns over potential dismissal for not filing charges against James and Comey. Siebert had only been appointed to the 120-day interim post in January.

Lowell emphasized that the case should have ended following the court's ruling, stating that Trump had "illegally installed a U.S. attorney to file baseless charges" rejected by career prosecutors.

Responding to the grand jury's decision, James expressed her gratitude, reiterating that the charges against her were unfounded and calling for an end to the politicization of the justice system. She affirmed her commitment to upholding the rule of law and serving the people of New York.
