Grand jury once again does not indict Letitia James, target of Trump

A federal grand jury has once more refused to bring charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James, a frequent focus of former President Donald Trump. The rejection comes less than two weeks after a judge dismissed an earlier indictment targeting her.
Neither representatives for James nor officials from the Justice Department provided immediate comment on the matter. Reports from multiple media outlets indicated that the renewed push for an indictment failed on December 4.
The prior case was dismissed after Senior U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie determined that Attorney General Pam Bondi illegally appointed Lindsey Halligan, who had previously served as Trumps personal attorney, to a leading prosecutorial role. Because Halligan was responsible for obtaining the indictment, the judge ruled that the charges could not stand.
The initial indictment against James came shortly after Trump publicly accused James, former FBI Director James Comey, and Sen. Adam Schiff of serious wrongdoing. His statements raised alarm in legal circles, as they appeared to contradict long-standing norms separating the White House from Justice Department investigations.
Bondi assigned Halligan to the role only days after Trumps remarks, despite Halligan lacking prior experience as a prosecutor. Comey was subsequently charged with providing false testimony to Congress, and James faced accusations of financial fraud, but each case was ultimately dismissed under the same legal reasoning. Schiff has not been charged, though he has been scrutinized by federal investigators.
James has drawn Trumps ire due to her 2022 civil case alleging that he artificially boosted the value of his assets to secure favorable financial terms. A court originally agreed and imposed a substantial financial penalty, which was later overturned as excessive, though the fraud finding itself was upheld. James office is seeking to reinstate the penalty through appeal.
Comey became a vocal critic of Trump after being dismissed from his FBI post in 2017, while Schiff led inquiries into Trumps conduct surrounding the January 6 Capitol attack and his dealings with Ukraine, which resulted in Trumps first impeachment.
Analysis: Federal Grand Jury Rejects New Indictment Against Letitia James
The decision by a federal grand jury to decline bringing new charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James reinforces the legal setbacks surrounding attempts to prosecute her. This follows closely on the heels of a judge dismissing an earlier indictment due to procedural improprieties in the appointment of the prosecuting attorney.
Senior U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie's ruling emphasized that Lindsey Halligan’s appointment, despite her lack of prosecutorial experience and prior work with former President Trump, invalidated the initial charges. As a result, the legal foundation for any renewed indictment faced significant obstacles.
The repeated failures to advance charges highlight the persistent tensions between political rhetoric and judicial standards. While former President Trump has publicly criticized James and others, these grand jury outcomes underscore the judiciary’s role in maintaining procedural integrity regardless of high-profile political pressure.
