Indiana State Senator Michael Bohacek announced on Friday that he will not back efforts to redraw congressional districts in his state to benefit Republicans, following President Donald Trump's derogatory remarks toward Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Bohacek stated on Facebook that he opposes the redistricting plan, citing that the president's use of offensive language carries consequences. He also mentioned having a daughter with Down syndrome, emphasizing the personal significance of his stance.

Trump had posted on Truth Social about permanently halting immigration from certain countries and criticized Minnesota's Somali community without evidence. He referred to Governor Walz using a slur and claimed the governor failed to maintain order in the state.

Bohacek's opposition to redistricting comes amid ongoing pressure from Trump administration officials, including the president and vice president, urging Indiana GOP leaders to reshape districts to favor Republicans ahead of next years midterms. Requests for comments from the White House, Bohacek, and Walz were not immediately returned.

Legislators in Indiana are scheduled to reconvene next week to discuss a redistricting proposal, despite earlier indications that there were insufficient votes in the state Senate to approve a partisan map. Earlier this month, Trump expressed disappointment with Indiana Republicans for not pursuing redistricting and encouraged primary challenges against those who opposed it, calling it crucial to the country's future. Some lawmakers named by Trump were later involved in swatting incidents.

Vice President JD Vance visited Indiana twice this year to meet with local Republican leaders and promote the redistricting agenda. Meanwhile, other states, including Texas, Ohio, Florida, Maryland, and Virginia, are also seeing partisan redistricting initiatives, with California Democrats similarly pursuing maps that could increase their midterm representation.

Author's Analysis: Bohacek’s Stand Against Partisan Redistricting

Indiana State Senator Michael Bohacek’s public refusal to support a Republican-favored redistricting plan marks a significant moment in the state’s political landscape. His decision follows President Trump’s recent derogatory remarks about Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and highlights a growing tension within the Republican Party over the use of offensive language and its political consequences.

Bohacek explicitly cited personal reasons for his stance, noting that he has a daughter with Down syndrome, signaling that his opposition is grounded in both principle and personal conviction. This adds a human dimension to what is otherwise a highly strategic political maneuver surrounding redistricting efforts.

His position comes amid sustained pressure from the Trump administration, including both the president and Vice President JD Vance, to redraw Indiana’s congressional map in a way that favors Republican candidates ahead of the 2026 midterms. Despite these efforts, Bohacek’s resistance suggests that support for a strictly partisan map in the Indiana Senate may be weaker than anticipated.

While other states, including Texas, Ohio, Florida, Maryland, and Virginia, are also pursuing partisan redistricting initiatives, Bohacek’s stance underscores that individual lawmakers can act against party leadership when moral or personal considerations are at stake. The upcoming Senate reconvening will test whether partisan pressures can overcome such principled opposition.
