Indiana Republican Votes Against Redistricting Following Trump's Offensive Comment About Disability

As Republican leaders at the national level and in Indiana navigate a tense debate over redistricting ahead of the midterm elections, one state senator has publicly diverged from President Donald Trump. However, his stance is not aligned with Trumps interests.

Late Thursday, Trump posted a harsh message on his social media platform, Truth Social, targeting immigrants and criticizing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, using offensive language. Indiana State Senator Michael Bohacek reacted strongly, calling the presidents language unacceptable. Bohacek announced he would vote against any redistricting plan designed to benefit Republican congressional candidates and urged Trump to reconsider his word choices.

Many of you have asked my position on redistricting, Bohacek wrote on Facebook. I have been an advocate for people with intellectual disabilities since my second daughter was born. She has Down Syndrome, and these kinds of insults are deeply personal to me.

He added that this is not the first instance of derogatory language from the president, and that such words carry consequences. Bohacek made it clear: I will be voting NO on redistricting, suggesting that Trump should use the upcoming months to convince voters that his policies and behavior deserve support.

Bohacek represents a district in northern Indiana between Gary and South Bend. Trumps attack on Governor Walz followed the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., one of whom died while the other remains in critical condition. The president made unverified claims about Somali refugees in Minnesota, prompting Walz to challenge Trumps mental fitness.

Authorities identified the suspect in the shooting as an Afghan national who previously assisted the CIA and allegedly traveled across the country from Washington state to commit the attack. Trump has since called for stricter measures against immigrants from certain countries.

Political analysts note that Trumps confrontational style may actually undermine Republican prospects in the 2026 midterms, as control of both the House and Senate is uncertain. Indiana Republicans, who currently control the legislature and governorship, remain divided over redistricting efforts. House Speaker Mike Johnson is scheduled to discuss the matter with lawmakers in a conference call on Saturday.
