Jack Smith, ex-prosecutor, to give testimony at House Judiciary

Dec. 3 The House Judiciary Committee has issued a subpoena for former special counsel Jack Smith to appear at a closed-door hearing on Dec. 17. The notice, sent by committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, requests Smith's participation as part of the committee's inquiry into his and the Biden administration's prosecutions involving former President Donald Trump.

The investigations focus on allegations that Trump attempted to obstruct the transfer of power after the 2020 election and on claims regarding his handling of classified documents. Jordan stated that, given Smiths previous role as special counsel, he holds crucial information relevant to the committees oversight efforts. The subpoena also requires Smith to submit related documents by Dec. 12.

Smith's attorney, Peter Koski, confirmed that the former special counsel will comply with the subpoena, noting that Smith had offered to testify voluntarily in October. Koski expressed disappointment that the earlier offer was declined, emphasizing that Smith looks forward to clarifying his investigative work and addressing misconceptions.

Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, D-Md., criticized Republicans for rejecting a public appearance by Smith, accusing them of attempting to manipulate his statements for partisan purposes. Raskin argued that a public hearing would better serve the American people by providing transparency, rather than confining the testimony to a private session.

Smiths investigation concluded after the Supreme Court's July 2024 decision, which affirmed broad presidential immunity from prosecution for actions taken while in office, including the subjects Smith had examined.
