Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), serving on the Armed Services Committee, announced on Sunday that military officials will be required to testify under oath regarding reported follow-up strikes on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean. An investigation is underway, Kelly told NBCs Meet the Press host Kristen Welker. We will hold a public hearing, have these officials testify under oath, determine the facts, and ensure accountability.

Reports from CNN and The Washington Post on Friday indicated that the U.S. carried out a second strike on the alleged drug boat off Venezuelas coast on September 2, targeting survivors of the first attack. This mission marked the beginning of a series of strikes authorized by President Trump against vessels operating in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.

The strikes have resulted in over 80 fatalities, with the administration claiming those killed were involved in trafficking narcotics into the United States, escalating tensions with Venezuela and its leader, Nicols Maduro. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on social media platform X that the operations are designed to be lethal, kinetic strikes and affirmed that every trafficker eliminated is linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization.

On November 24, more than two months after the first strike, the State Department officially designated the Cartel de los Soles as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The administration claims that Maduro leads the group, which is responsible for smuggling drugs into the U.S. Hegseth emphasized, Our ongoing Caribbean operations fully comply with U.S. and international law, adhering to the law of armed conflict, and have been reviewed and approved by top military and civilian legal authorities throughout the chain of command.

Additionally, Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.), chair and ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, announced on Saturday that the committee will maintain thorough oversight of these activities.

Analysis of U.S. Military Strikes on Suspected Drug-Smuggling Vessel: A Closer Look

Following Senator Mark Kelly's announcement on Sunday that military officials will be required to testify under oath regarding the follow-up strikes on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean, it is clear that this case has raised significant questions. While the U.S. government maintains that the operations were necessary for national security, the scale of the strikes and their aftermath invite scrutiny.

On September 2, a second strike was reportedly carried out off the coast of Venezuela targeting survivors of a previous attack. This marks the continuation of aggressive military actions initiated under President Trump's administration, focusing on drug vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. The administration claims these operations aim to dismantle narcotics trafficking into the U.S., yet the reported fatalities – over 80 individuals – and their alleged connections to terrorist organizations complicate the narrative.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's statements emphasize that these operations adhere to U.S. and international law. However, the growing fatalities and the declaration of the Cartel de los Soles as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the State Department raise the stakes. With both U.S. officials and Venezuelan leaders exchanging tense remarks, the question of proportionality and the impact on international relations remains unresolved.

While Senator Kelly has called for a public hearing and promises full accountability, the long-term effects of such operations on U.S.-Venezuela relations could be profound. As the Armed Services Committee pledges "thorough oversight," the details that emerge from this investigation will undoubtedly influence future military policy in the region.
