Former chief usher Gary Walters holds a deep attachment to the East Wing of the White House, where he first met his wife, Barbara. Despite being asked about Donald Trumps proposed demolition of the wing, he refrains from criticism, noting that presidential alterations are nothing new.
Walters served seven administrations over 37 years, beginning under Richard Nixon and continuing through Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W Bush before retiring in 2007. As chief usher, he oversaw home operations for each first family, managing staff, renovation, food service, and logistics.
Walters remembers Ronald and Nancy Reagan with particular affection. He recalls Nancys dedication to flawless hospitality, organizing full-scale rehearsal dinners in advance of state banquets to ensure impeccable cuisine and service. Distinguished guests included Margaret Thatcher, whose husband Denis once toured the White House with Walters and was shown preserved burn marks from the War of 1812.
He also witnessed defining historical moments, including Mikhail Gorbachevs visit in 1987. After the signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, Walters stood nearby as the two leaders addressed the world, sensing a profound shift in Cold War tensions.
Daily life inside the residence exposed the personal habits of presidents and their families. Walters recalls George HW Bush issuing a memo ordering staff to stop feeding the family dog, Ranger, who had become noticeably overweight due to constant treats.
When Bill Clinton moved in, security concerns arose over his jogging routine. Before the familys arrival, Hillary Clinton requested a private track, leading to the installation of synthetic turf around the south roadway for the presidents daily runs.
Walters experience extended into crisis. On 11 September 2001, preparations for a congressional picnic were abruptly dismantled as reports of additional attacks emerged. He and a small team remained on the lawn, clearing over 160 tables by hand to ensure Marine One could land when George W Bush returned to Washington. Walters remains convinced that United Airlines Flight 93 was headed for the White House before passengers forced it down in Pennsylvania.
That night, Walters accompanied Bush back to the residence after his national address, noting the presidents sober focus on the uncertain days ahead.
He also maintained a personal tradition for each departing president: presenting two flags flown over the White House, one from their first day in office and the other from their last.
Though he never witnessed any of the ghostly sightings often rumored throughout the mansion, Walters does recall colleagues who believed they encountered unexplained activity, particularly near the Lincoln Bedroom, including a rocking chair reportedly moving on its own.
