Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, reacted on Wednesday after President Trump labeled him a fool amid ongoing disputes over Somali immigrants in Minnesota.
Speaking on CNNs Erin Burnett OutFront, Frey said, Thats neither clever, nor is it right. Donald Trump seems to speak impulsively without considering the impact of his words. But the reality is, Minneapolis is not a hellholeits a vibrant city.
He emphasized the citys appeal, saying, Minneapolis is a city surrounded by parks. The Somali American community is not harming our city; they contribute positively and take pride in calling this remarkable place home.
Earlier Wednesday, in the Oval Office, Trump criticized Frey after a reporter noted the mayors pride in the Somali community. Well then hes a fool, Trump stated. He continued by disparaging Somalia, describing the nation as chaotic and suggesting that Somali immigrants should be out of here.
The president also referred to Minnesota as a hellhole and reiterated his criticism of Somali refugees, claiming they are overwhelming the state. In a recent Cabinet meeting, Trump targeted Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), labeling her garbage and expressing opposition to Somali immigration, saying Somalia stinks.
Omar, who fled civil war in Somalia as a child, became a U.S. citizen 25 years ago.
In response, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson stated via email that President Trump is absolutely right to highlight the problems caused by radical Somali migrants that Democrats have allowed into the country, burdening American taxpayers.
Analysis: Minneapolis Response to Presidential Criticism
From my perspective, Mayor Jacob Frey's reaction highlights a clear contrast between local leadership and federal rhetoric. While President Trump labels both the Somali community and the city of Minneapolis in harsh terms, Frey emphasizes the contributions and positive impact of Somali Americans on the city’s social and cultural life.
This exchange underscores a broader tension in U.S. politics over immigration and community integration. Minneapolis positions itself as a city of inclusivity and civic engagement, countering the narrative of disorder promoted by the President.
It is evident that this confrontation is not only about personalities but about the image and policies of Minneapolis. The city continues to assert its identity as vibrant and diverse, challenging simplistic labels such as "hellhole" or claims of being overrun by immigrants.
