Morale within the United States diplomatic corps has dropped significantly as the Trump administration reduces funding and alters long-standing procedures. A recent survey revealed that 98% of American foreign service officers have experienced a decline in workplace morale since Donald Trump returned to the presidency, and 86% reported that fulfilling their duties has become increasingly difficult.
Reports highlighted that the traditional role of diplomats is being weakened. According to analysis cited by the Financial Times, U.S. foreign policy has shifted from an era of diplomacy to what has been described as the age of the envoy, where immediate transactional agreements are often given more weight than sustained diplomatic expertise. Experts caution that hastily brokered negotiations, conducted through unofficial channels by temporary envoys, are unlikely to lead to durable or well-organized resolutions.
