New poll shows JD Vance's likelihood of winning 2028 GOP nomination is decreasing

J.D. Vance's prospects for securing the Republican nomination for the 2028 presidential election appear to be diminishing, according to a recent poll. The survey tracking potential successors to Donald Trump shows that the vice presidents advantage among hypothetical candidates has decreased notably in the past few months.

Back in August, Vance held a commanding lead with 36% of respondents support, 20 points ahead of Donald Trump Jr., who garnered 16%. By October, while Vance still led with 38%, Trump Jr. had narrowed the gap to 20%, according to the McLaughlin & Associates poll.

Vance's poll numbers have continued to slip, with the latest November survey of 439 voters, conducted from November 17 to 24, showing his lead over Trump Jr. shrinking to just ten points. The results placed Vance at 34% and Trump Jr. at 24%.

Mark Shanahan, associate professor at the University of Sussex, attributes Vances declining support to his strong association with Trump. The challenge for Vance is that his political identity is closely linked to this administration, Shanahan explained. At present, he must align with the president; any deviation could be perceived as failing to fulfill his role. So, as Trumps ratings falter, Vance faces the consequences.

Donald Trump Jr. continues to gain ground in voter surveys, gradually closing in on Vance.

The president himself has seen a sharp drop in approval in recent months. Multiple major polls now reflect a negative rating for Trump, a first in his political career. A Fox News poll indicated that 61% of respondents believe Trumps administration has harmed the economy, while only 38% approve of his economic policies. Additionally, 76% expressed a negative view of the economy, an increase from 67% in July and 70% at the end of former President Bidens term.

Other surveys conducted by YouGov, Gallup, Ipsos, R.M.G Research, Morning Consult, and Quinnipiac similarly show that Trump holds a net negative approval rating among voters.

The White House, however, defends the presidents economic performance. Trump has achieved key objectives he promised during his campaign, including border security, addressing inflation, reducing drug prices, eliminating certain taxes, and implementing reforms to prioritize American workers, stated White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson to the Daily Mail.
