Ohio Republicans prepare for a primary where entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy leads after major rivals withdrew, leaving him facing only two lesser-known GOP challengers in a race that highlights party dynamics and voter engagement ahead of the general election.

Ohio governor faces little-known GOP challengers

Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who has received endorsement from former President Donald Trump, has emerged as the leading figure in the Republican primary for Ohio governor. In recent months, Ramaswamy has effectively removed major, well-funded GOP competitors from the race, resulting in a primary that appears largely uncontested.

The Ohio political landscape experienced notable changes when Dave Yost withdrew from the Republican primary, giving the party’s favored endorsement to Ramaswamy. Similarly, Jim Tressel opted not to pursue higher office, leaving Ramaswamy, a 40-year-old biotech entrepreneur, as the front-runner supported by key Republican figures. Despite this, he still faces competition from two lesser-known GOP candidates.

Primary Opponents

Casey Putsch is a business owner, car enthusiast, and watchmaker based in northwest Ohio. Putsch has criticized Ramaswamy by highlighting his immigrant background in relation to his wealth. He acknowledges that his chances of winning are minimal but maintains a presence in the race.

Heather Hill, a former southeast Ohio school board member, initially considered running as a third-party candidate but ultimately registered as a Republican. Hill’s platform focuses on eliminating property taxes and reforming child protective services, among other policy priorities.

Republican Primary Dynamics

The Republican primary is viewed as a test of voter engagement rather than a contest over who will win, as Ramaswamy is widely expected to secure the nomination. The winner will face Dr. Amy Acton, former director of the Ohio Department of Health, who has no Democratic challenger, along with Libertarian candidate Donald Kissick. Criticism of Ramaswamy has centered on his support for businesses employing foreign-born workers and his earlier proposals to eliminate property taxes, which he later scaled back. Ramaswamy has publicly addressed racist attacks on social media targeting his Indian heritage and Hindu faith, emphasizing his Cincinnati roots in a December 2025 opinion piece.

Candidate Profiles

Vivek Ramaswamy

  • Raised in Evendale, Cincinnati by Indian immigrant parents
  • Education: St. Xavier High School, Harvard University, Yale Law School
  • Founded Roivant Sciences in 2014; co-founded Strive Assessment Management in 2022
  • Ran for president in 2023, finishing fourth in the Iowa caucuses
  • Former co-leader of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency under Elon Musk
  • Selected Ohio Senate President Rob McColley as his running mate
  • Resides in Upper Arlington with his wife Apoorva and three children

Casey Putsch

  • From Perrysburg, Ohio
  • Founded the Genius Garage Educational Program
  • Invented the Omega Car prototype, achieving 104.7 miles per gallon
  • Ohio State University graduate; lives in northwest Ohio with family
  • Selected Warren County Republican Kim Georgeton as running mate
  • Criticizes Ramaswamy’s heritage, property tax proposals, data centers, and occasionally Trump

Heather Hill

  • Former Morgan Local School District board member
  • Supports property tax elimination, child protective services reform, opposes abortion, and supports IVF
  • Initially considered a third-party run, then filed as Republican
  • Selected Stuart Moats, a tree service business owner, as running mate
  • Resides in Malta with her husband

Election Outlook

Ramaswamy holds strong advantages in the primary, including endorsements from the Ohio Republican Party, former President Trump, outgoing Governor Mike DeWine, and other prominent GOP figures. He has largely refrained from direct attacks on his low-profile opponents, concentrating on his potential general election match-up with Dr. Amy Acton. Early voting has already begun in Ohio, and the Republican primary is scheduled for May 5. Analysts indicate that while Ramaswamy is expected to win, the primary will measure his ability to energize and mobilize Republican voters across the state.
