Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross told theGrio, The more he shows signs of decline, the clearer it becomes that the MAGA movement will eventually move to someone else, whether he accepts it or not.

President Donald Trump posted a nearly 300-word response on social media criticizing a New York Times report examining the challenges of aging while in office. The Times noted that, at 79, Trump has displayed signs of fatigue, including briefly dozing off during an Oval Office press conference, and has participated in fewer public events and domestic trips than in his first term. The report also referenced his disclosure of medical treatments, including an unspecified MRI.

In his response, Trump labeled the New York Times as failing and called out White House correspondent Katie Rogers, calling her a third-rate reporter who is ugly, both inside and out. He highlighted accomplishments during his presidency, citing economic performance and his 2024 election win, and rejected claims that he is losing energy, stating, To do this requires a lot of Work and Energy, and I have never worked so hard in my life. Yet despite all of this, the Radical Left Lunatics in the soon to fold New York Times did a hit piece on me that I am perhaps losing my Energy, despite facts that show the exact opposite.

Trump also called The Times an ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE and falsely claimed high approval ratings, saying, There will be a day when I run low on Energy, it happens to everyone, but with a PERFECT PHYSICAL EXAM AND A COMPREHENSIVE COGNITIVE TEST (That was aced) JUST RECENTLY TAKEN, it certainly is not now!

Cross described the attention on Trumps age as bittersweet irony. She remarked, I giggled a bit because Donald Trump is 79 years old. It is not unusual for someone at that age to slow down. If Joe Biden were criticized for visible signs of decline, the same observations could apply to Trump, who is in the same age group.

Trump has consistently presented himself as a strong, masculine figure. Cross added, He regularly posts AI images portraying himself as larger than life, like a wrestler or an NFL quarterback, which his doctors statements about his height and weight tried to support but clearly did not.

Despite his long-standing influence over the Republican Party, Trump is technically a lame-duck president. His authority has shown signs of weakening amid Republican disagreements, including votes to release the Jeffrey Epstein files, which caused a public falling-out with supporter Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who later resigned. Upcoming midterm elections may result in Democratic control of Congress, potentially leading to investigations into Trumps administration.

Cross told theGrio, As his influence diminishes, it becomes evident that the MAGA movement will eventually pass to someone else. For Trump, that is difficult, because he wants to maintain the image of being invincible and dominant within the MAGA base. Age-related decline threatens that persona.

The New York Times defended its reporting, emphasizing the accuracy and firsthand sources behind its coverage. In a statement to theGrio, the publication said, Name-calling and personal insults do not alter our reporting. Journalists like Katie Rogers exemplify how an independent press helps Americans understand their government and leaders.

Analysis: Trump's Response to Age-Related Criticism and Its Impact on the MAGA Movement

Donald Trump's recent rebuttal to a New York Times article examining his aging and diminishing energy highlights a critical moment in his political career. At 79, Trump's physical and mental state has become a subject of scrutiny, especially as his public appearances have become less frequent and he has shown signs of fatigue. His response—filled with fiery rhetoric and personal attacks against the media—reflects his ongoing struggle to maintain the strong, dominant image he has long cultivated within the MAGA movement.

Trump’s accusations that the New York Times is a "failing" outlet and its journalists "enemies of the people" are not new tactics in his repertoire. This reflects his strategy of attacking the press whenever his image is threatened. However, beneath the insults, there is a deeper issue: Trump’s public persona is increasingly challenged by the realities of aging. While he still claims to have high energy and mental clarity, his physical decline may be difficult to hide as time passes. Cross' comment about the "bittersweet irony" of focusing on Trump’s age is apt, especially when considering the same critiques were aimed at Joe Biden just a few years ago.

Trump’s assertion of "perfect physical exams" and "aced" cognitive tests is part of his broader attempt to stave off any signs of weakness, particularly among his supporters who expect him to be invincible. Yet, even his staunchest allies cannot ignore the reality that he is no longer the figure he was in 2016. The loss of political authority, as demonstrated by his falling out with prominent Republican figures like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, further signals a shift in the Republican Party’s dynamics. As his influence wanes, the MAGA movement may inevitably turn to a new leader—one who can fill the void of strength and vitality that Trump once embodied.

In sum, Trump’s battle with his own age and the public’s perception of it reflects a pivotal moment for both him and his movement. The coming years will likely determine if he can maintain his grip on the Republican base or if a younger, more energetic figure will take the reins. For now, the personal insults and defensive posturing serve only to delay an inevitable truth: age, as much as Trump may resist it, will eventually catch up with him.
