Recent surveys show growing doubt among voters who supported Donald Trump in the election Many still stand by their choice yet confidence is fading as concerns rise over policy and the Iran conflict signaling a shift in parts of his base
Recent surveys reveal that support among President Donald Trump voters is showing measurable weakening, with many expressing concern or partial regret about their 2024 election choice. This trend has become more pronounced as Trump’s overall approval ratings have dropped to new lows amid ongoing developments in the Iran conflict.
Evidence of Rising Voter Uncertainty
Data from multiple surveys, including a YouGov poll conducted with the University of Massachusetts Amherst, highlights a significant shift in voter sentiment. Unlike direct questions about regret, the poll employed a sliding scale designed to capture nuanced responses, including partial confidence, mixed feelings, and mild regret.
In April 2025, 74% of Trump voters reported being highly confident in their vote, showing no signs of doubt. Recent polling shows this figure has declined to 62%, marking a notable reduction in voter certainty. Currently, 38% of Trump supporters express some level of reservation, double the 19% observed among Kamala Harris voters.
Within this 38%, 21% maintain general confidence while still reporting some concerns. Respondents indicating mixed feelings increased from 8% in April 2025 to 17% in the latest survey. Additionally, 5% stated they regretted voting for Trump and would choose differently if given the opportunity, although other survey measures suggest actual regret could be higher.
Hypothetical Recasting of the 2024 Vote
When asked whether they would vote the same way if casting their 2024 ballots again, 84% of Trump supporters said they would vote for him once more, compared with 91% of Harris supporters indicating repeat support. This implies that approximately 16% of Trump voters might reconsider their choice with hindsight.
Additional Polling Insights
The Verasight poll conducted around the same period found that 13% of Trump voters expressed some level of regret, including 5% with strong regret and 8% with moderate regret. Younger voters under 30 reported higher regret at 17%, while Hispanic Trump voters reported 16% regret. Overall, regret among Trump supporters has roughly doubled compared to earlier surveys conducted in April and October 2025 by Washington Post and Ipsos.
Potential Political Consequences
These figures suggest that between 1 in 8 and 1 in 6 Trump voters now experience some form of regret regarding the 2024 election. If these voters disengage from the Republican Party in the 2026 midterm elections, it could provide significant advantages for Democratic candidates and possibly trigger a larger electoral shift.
Softening Support on Key Policy Issues
Beyond vote regret, Trump’s base is also showing declining approval on major issues:
- Overall approval: 22% disapprove
- Immigration policies: 15% disapprove
- Foreign affairs: 25% disapprove
- Economic performance: 30% disapprove
- Inflation handling: 39% disapprove
- Gas prices: 45% disapprove
These results indicate a substantial portion of Trump supporters expressing dissatisfaction on issues central to his campaign, including the Iran conflict, immigration policy, and economic management.
Support Decline Among Working-Class White Voters
A CNN poll also highlights declining approval among working-class White voters, a crucial segment of Trump’s electorate. Their approval rating fell from 63% in February 2025 to 49% in recent surveys, reflecting broader softening support within key demographics.
Conclusion
The available data consistently demonstrate that a significant share of Trump’s 2024 voters are experiencing concern or regret. While full-scale regret remains limited, increasing uncertainty and dissatisfaction on core issues indicate potential challenges for Trump and the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
