President Donald Trumps plan to add a 1000 seat ballroom to the White House has triggered widespread criticism, with over 97000 percent of more than 35000 public comments opposing the project, prompting officials to delay the vote for further review.
President Donald Trump's proposal to construct a large ballroom at the White House has sparked significant public backlash. The initiative involves adding a 1,000-seat ballroom to the historic presidential residence, and the plan has generated extensive criticism, revealing a clear disconnect between the administration’s presentation of the project and public sentiment.
Public Response to the Proposal
The National Capital Planning Commission received over 35,000 public comments regarding the proposed ballroom ahead of its March 5 hearing. An analysis of submissions posted on the commission’s website shows that more than 97% of the responses expressed opposition to the expansion. Commission officials confirmed that the overwhelming majority of public input was against the project.
Stephen Staudigl, spokesperson for the National Capital Planning Commission, described the volume of feedback as unprecedented. In official communication, he noted that this represents the largest amount of public commentary for any project reviewed by the panel in recent years. In addition to written comments, over 100 individuals were scheduled to deliver testimony during the virtual hearing on the proposal.
Opposition Across Political and Professional Lines
The criticism of the ballroom proposal is not limited to political affiliation or professional background. Many longstanding supporters of Donald Trump voiced disapproval. Jim Cunningham, a Republican local official from Media, Pennsylvania, stated: I voted for Trump three times. But I did not vote for this. Trump is only a temporary occupant of the White House. It belongs to the American people. It's not his personal property.
Former White House staff members also challenged the administration's argument that a new ballroom is necessary for hosting VIP events. Deborah Sloan, who served as assistant to White House Social Secretary Lucy Winchester from 1969 to 1972, highlighted the importance of intimate gatherings during state dinners. Sloan explained: The magic of a state dinner is the intimacy the guests feel when they're in the presence of the president of the United States, not in having to stand in a receiving line with 500 or 1,000 people.
Next Steps for the Proposal
In response to the extensive public feedback, officials from the National Capital Planning Commission decided to postpone the vote on the ballroom project. The proposal will be reconsidered during the commission’s next meeting, scheduled for April 2. This delay provides additional time for review and assessment of the significant public input received.
