Republican Rep. Darrell Issa decides to remain in California instead of pursuing US House run in Texas

LOS ANGELES Republican Congressman Darrell Issa has announced that he will continue representing his California district, dismissing earlier speculation about a potential run for Congress in Texas.

I can hold this seat. Im not quitting on California and neither should anyone else, Issa, whose district centers on San Diego County, stated.

The idea of relocating briefly emerged after California approved a new congressional map in November, significantly altering several districts, including Issa's, ahead of the midterm elections. The redistricting, led by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, aims to convert up to five Republican seats to Democratic control, counterbalancing Republican gains in Texas.

As Republicans fight to maintain their narrow House majority, the national debate over congressional control has extended across multiple states. Court challenges continue to affect the implementation of new maps, including a federal court blocking recently approved Texas districts and the Supreme Court considering potential involvement.

Issa, a wealthy businessman known for his car alarm company, said Texas officials and residents encouraged him to consider running there following Californias approval of the new map. I appreciate the opportunity, but California is my home. I told them Im going to stay in Congress, and I dont need to go to Texas for that, he said.

Issa emphasized his confidence in voters from San Diego and Riverside counties, trusting that they will evaluate his record and support him regardless of party affiliation. Throughout his career, Issa has relocated within California to navigate changing political landscapes, but his district now includes the Democratic stronghold of Palm Springs, making reelection more challenging.

His potential move to Texas was met with caution from House Republican leadership. Representative Richard Hudson of North Carolina, who leads the GOP campaign committee, encouraged Issa to focus on his current district instead.
