Senate Republican suggests compromise on Obamacare subsidies

Next week, Senate Republicans are expected to block Democrats proposal to directly extend expiring health insurance subsidies under Obamacare. In response, a potential compromise has emerged from within the GOP.

Senator Susan Collins of Maine is advocating for a two-year plan that would set a $200,000 income limit and remove zero-dollar premium plans. She has discussed the proposal with Democrats and described the income cap as very generous.

The question remains whether enough Republican senators would back the plan. Senator Kevin Cramer of North Dakota expressed interest, calling it the sweet spot for potential agreement. However, Senator John Cornyn of Texas stated he opposes any continuation of the Biden-era bonus subsidies.

With significant GOP resistance, bipartisan agreement on health care appears unlikely. Senator Cramer suggested that instead of seeking a bill fully supported by Republicans from the start, negotiators should aim to build a coalition with an equal number of senators from both parties to advance legislation.
