WARSAW, Poland Slovenia has decided to delay the planned procurement of around 100 AMV XP armored vehicles from Finnish manufacturer Patria, signaling a new chapter in the countrys ongoing armored vehicle acquisition saga. Despite having signed a letter of intent with Finland in February, the government will not approve the purchase before the next parliamentary elections, slated for March 2026.
The AMV XP was chosen last year following the cancellation of the previous administrations 2022 contract to acquire 45 Boxer vehicles from the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), a multinational military procurement agency. The Finnish vehicles were intended to strengthen Slovenias medium battalion battle group and medium combat reconnaissance battalion.
Reports in Slovenian media suggest multiple reasons for the delay, including the governments push for enhanced troop protection measures, such as anti-drone systems, and the involvement of domestic industry in turret production. Some analysts, however, argue that the 695 million ($811 million) procurement could face public resistance as the largest military purchase in Slovenias history.
Matej Tonin, a former defense minister and current MEP from the opposition New Slovenia party, criticized the postponement. He noted that under the previous Boxer plan, the army would have already received 35 of the 45 vehicles. Tonin warned that each year of delay drives up military costs due to rising demand and inflation, urging the government to build on existing initiatives rather than start over.
A Ministry of Defense spokesperson told Defense News that the Patria acquisition is ongoing and has not been stopped, though technical upgrades will extend the timeline. The spokesperson explained that evolving battlefield strategies, including drone usage and counter-drone needs, necessitate modern modular enhancements for the 8x8 vehicles. While this will take additional time, it is justified by the greater operational effectiveness of the upgraded vehicles, the spokesperson added.
