Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana is navigating increasingly difficult waters in the House of Representatives. Recent events have highlighted his struggles to maintain control over legislative proceedings.
Before Thanksgiving, Johnson experienced a notable setback when Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, along with three Republican women, joined Democrats to force a nearly unanimous vote to release the Jeffrey Epstein files. This defeat exposed vulnerabilities in Johnsons leadership and emboldened other members to bypass his authority.
This week, Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida initiated a discharge petition aimed at compelling a vote on a bipartisan measure that would prohibit members of Congress from owning or trading individual stocks. Nine Republicans and six Democrats have signed the petition. While still far from the 218 signatures needed to circumvent the speaker, it signals a growing willingness among lawmakers to challenge party leadership directly.
Moderate Republican Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania has also indicated plans to use discharge petitions to push for crushing sanctions on Russia amid faltering peace efforts and to extend expiring health care subsidies unless leadership acts before year-end. Fitzpatrick emphasized that such tools are for all members, not just the minority.
Johnsons legislative agenda has faced further disruption. On Wednesday, his team withdrew the SCORE Act, a key proposal to standardize compensation for student-athletes, after resistance from conservative Republicans led by Representative Chip Roy of Texas. Concurrently, Johnson contends with pressure from rank-and-file members seeking votes to censure colleagues, including Republican Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina, who targeted fellow Republican Cory Mills of Florida. Prominent female Republicans, including Elise Stefanik and Marjorie Taylor Greene, have also publicly challenged Johnson.
Much of Johnsons difficulty stems from a slim Republican majority in the House. Following the swearing-in of Tennessee Republican Matt Van Epps, the party holds a 220-213 edge, allowing only three defections on any bill without jeopardizing passage.
Trump Addresses Economic Concerns Ahead of Pennsylvania Visit
President Donald Trump is preparing to visit northeast Pennsylvania in response to public concern over the economy. Americans have expressed dissatisfaction with rising prices, high interest rates, and limited access to well-paying jobs. An October NBC News poll found that nearly two-thirds of voters feel Trump has fallen short on economic promises. Recent elections in gubernatorial and special congressional races further reflected this sentiment.
The upcoming trip to Pennsylvania is strategic. The state was pivotal in Trumps previous electoral victories and losses, and four Republican House members face competitive races in next years midterms. While Trump is unlikely to alter his policy direction significantly, the visit represents acknowledgment of economic frustrations and an effort to communicate solutions directly to voters.
