Stephen A. Smith praised President Donald Trump on Wednesday, stating that school is in session and suggesting that Democrats should take note of the presidents latest pardon decision. Speaking on Straight Shooter on SiriusXM, Smith described Trumps action as an incredibly shrewd political maneuver regarding the pardon of Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX).

In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed that Cuellar had been unjustly targeted by the previous administration. Cuellar had faced indictment in March 2024 over accusations of accepting substantial foreign bribes.

We have to acknowledge the mans strategic brilliance. Hes cunning beyond measure! Smith said. He is giving the Democratic Party lessons on strategy. Lessons on influencing public perception and guiding people to think in his direction.

Smith highlighted that Trumps decision to pardon Cuellar demonstrates that not every action he takes is purely partisan. He noted that Cuellar is seen by many as a moderate within his party and has previously criticized President Biden on border issues. The congressman also represents a district that Trump carried in 2024.

You cant claim everything is partisan when the president extends a pardon to someone from the opposing party. Cuellar has taken stances on border policies that align with Trumps agenda, but he remains a Democrat, Smith explained.

He further encouraged Democrats to adopt more centrist positions, arguing that Trump has already strategically positioned himself there and may gain an ally in Cuellar.

Step away from the far left. Move toward the center. Trump has already outmaneuvered them on this front. Thats what makes this a masterstroke of political strategy. Truly brilliant! Smith concluded.

Analysis: Trump's Pardon Decision and its Political Strategy

Stephen A. Smith's praise for President Donald Trump's pardon of Representative Henry Cuellar highlights a key moment in political maneuvering. Smith’s commentary on SiriusXM emphasized that Trump’s actions are not simply partisan, but instead serve as a shrewd political strategy. By pardoning a Democratic representative, Trump has positioned himself as a player in the center of the political spectrum, sending a message to both parties.

Trump's decision to pardon Cuellar, who has been under investigation for alleged foreign bribery, signals a political message that extends beyond the boundaries of partisanship. As Cuellar represents a district Trump carried in 2024 and has taken positions aligning with Trump’s policies on border issues, this act could be viewed as an attempt to solidify a new alliance with moderates within the Democratic Party. In Smith’s view, this pardon was not just an act of goodwill but a strategic masterstroke aimed at shifting the political landscape.

Smith’s point about Cuellar’s centrist stance is important. He urges the Democratic Party to reconsider its alignment with the far left, suggesting that Trump has successfully outflanked them by moving toward the center. This analysis underscores the strategic importance of political positioning, and how actions like Trump’s pardon can influence not only immediate public opinion but also long-term political alignments.
