Survey finds 37% of Trump voters believe cost of living is at its worst in memory

A recent survey indicates that a significant portion of President Trumps 2024 supporters are facing unprecedented financial strain in covering everyday expenses. Conducted in mid-November shortly after the elections, the poll reveals that 37 percent of Trump voters feel that the cost of living here is the highest they can remember.

This figure is slightly below the 53 percent of 2024 Kamala Harris supporters and 46 percent of Americans overall who share this sentiment.

Meanwhile, 34 percent of Trump backers believe that living costs are challenging but recall times when they were worse. This perspective is held by only 22 percent of Harris supporters. Additionally, 24 percent of Trump voters feel that the cost of living here is not bad, compared to just 1 percent of Harris voters expressing the same view.

The poll emerges amid growing concerns over affordability nationwide. Recent elections saw Democratic campaigns emphasizing cost-of-living issues, while President Trump has dismissed these concerns as a con job by the opposition. Some Republicans have voiced worry that their economic messaging may not resonate with voters, a potential hurdle as the GOP aims to maintain control of both chambers in the 2026 midterm elections.

The survey also asked Americans to identify their top national concerns. Fifty-six percent named high living costs, followed by 32 percent citing the poor state of the economy, 24 percent high taxes, 23 percent difficulties in accessing healthcare, 21 percent threats to U.S. democracy, 20 percent rising crime, and 19 percent illegal immigration. Other issues were noted by fewer than 15 percent of respondents.

Support for prioritizing the high cost of living shows little partisan divide: 57 percent of Harris voters and 53 percent of Trump voters rank it among their top three concerns.

The Politico poll surveyed 2,098 adults online between November 14-17, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
