President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Somali immigrants in the United States, explicitly targeting Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and calling for them to be thrown out of the country. The remarks came during a Wednesday appearance in the Oval Office, following his previous days comments labeling immigrants from Somalia as garbage who do nothing but complain.

While sitting behind the Resolute Desk, Trump responded to a reporter mentioning that Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey takes pride in the citys large Somali population. Well then, hes a fool, Trump said. I wouldnt be proud. Look at how bad their nation is. Its not even a nation. Its just people walking around killing each otherAnd the Somalians should be out of here. They have destroyed our country.

Trump reiterated, The Somalians should be out of here. They have destroyed our country. And all they do is complain, complain, complain.

He also specifically targeted Rep. Ilhan Omar, a progressive Democrat, making unsubstantiated claims about her personal life. They have a representative, Ilhan Omar, who they say married her brother, thats a fraud, she tries to deny it now, but you cant really deny it because, you know, it just happened, Trump claimed. Omar, whose family fled Somalias civil war before resettling in Minnesota in 1997, has consistently denied these allegations as baseless rumors.

She shouldnt be allowed to be a congresswoman, Trump continued. And Im sure people are looking at that. And she should be thrown the hell out of our country.

Omar and local leaders quickly condemned the presidents remarks. Hes always been a racist, a bigot, a xenophobic and Islamophobic, Omar said, emphasizing Minnesotas welcoming stance toward Somali immigrants. We are going to be here regardless of what the president has to say.

Mayor Frey echoed this sentiment on social media, stating, Somali Americans are Americans. Their nation is America. And we are proud to have these Americans in Minneapolis. Minnesota Senator Tina Smith also criticized Trump, highlighting his lack of understanding of Somalia.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations denounced the presidents statements, comparing them to historical bigotry faced by other immigrant communities in the U.S.

Trumps comments gained support from some MAGA-aligned commentators, who called for the denaturalization of Omar. Throughout his political career, Trump has frequently targeted immigrant communities, and his recent remarks focus particularly on Somali residents in Minnesota, which hosts the nations largest Somali population.

Reports indicate the administration may send additional ICE agents to Minneapolis to carry out deportations for some Somali immigrants with final orders. Minnesota is home to approximately 79,400 Somali residents, roughly half of whom were born abroad, within a total state population of 5.7 million.

The remarks also reached international attention, with Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre stating, We are not the only country that Trump insults. Sometimes its better not to respond.

Analysis: President Trump's Controversial Remarks on Somali Immigrants

President Donald Trump's recent remarks regarding Somali immigrants in the U.S. have reignited debates on immigration and racism. His statements targeted Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, as well as the Somali community, which has a significant presence in the state. Trump's comments, made during an Oval Office appearance, labeled Somali immigrants as "garbage" and claimed they "destroyed" the country. Additionally, he suggested that Rep. Omar should be expelled from the U.S., amplifying his longstanding criticisms of her political views.

These remarks have sparked backlash from a variety of political and community leaders. Rep. Omar herself condemned the President’s words, calling him a "racist, bigot, xenophobe, and Islamophobe," while affirming the Somali-American community's integral role in Minnesota. Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis also defended the Somali population, emphasizing their American identity and contribution to the city. Minnesota Senator Tina Smith, along with other local officials, criticized Trump’s statements, pointing out the harmful misrepresentation of both Somalia and its people.

On the other hand, Trump's comments have found support among some right-wing commentators who have long championed anti-immigrant policies. There is even speculation that the Trump administration might send additional ICE agents to Minneapolis to carry out deportations. This reflects the broader political climate surrounding immigration, particularly in states with large Somali populations like Minnesota.

While the President’s remarks are not new in the context of his rhetoric toward immigrants, this latest round of criticism underscores the ongoing challenges faced by immigrant communities, particularly Somali Americans, in the U.S. The situation raises important questions about the nation's stance on immigration, the treatment of refugees, and the power of political discourse in shaping public opinion.
