Trump lights National Christmas Tree with LED student ornaments.

WASHINGTON, DC President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump carried on the longstanding tradition of lighting the National Christmas Tree, honoring the holiday season at the White House. During the ceremony, Trump paid tribute to two National Guard members who were injured last week near the White House. Guard member Sarah Beckstrom lost her life in the attack, while Andrew Wolfe is recovering. "Andrew is improving. Sarah, sadly, is watching from above," Trump remarked on December 4, noting he had met with Wolfe's parents to offer his condolences.

The White House has celebrated the holiday season for over a century, welcoming presidents, first ladies, children, and the public alike. The tradition of selecting a themed Christmas tree in the Blue Room began in 1961 with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Her tree featured toys, birds, angels, and characters inspired by the "Nutcracker Suite." Prior to the twentieth century, holiday decorations were private, intended for family and friends.

The tree lighting ceremony included musical performances by the Beach Boys, Alana Springsteen, Brett Young, and others. Trump commented on the weather, describing the 30-degree evening as comfortable and wind-free. He also reflected on his return to the presidency following the 2020 election and spoke about his commitment to all Americans, regardless of their political preferences.

The 2025 National Christmas Tree is a 32-foot red spruce from Highland County, Virginia, selected from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. This year's display marks the 103rd tree lighting event, a tradition dating back to President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. The tree is adorned with over 80,000 LED lights and surrounded by 59 smaller trees representing every U.S. state, territory, the District of Columbia, and federal schools. These smaller trees feature ornaments crafted by students, such as a Florida beach scene, an Alaskan moose, and an Indiana race car.

The National Christmas Tree exhibit is open to the public from December 6 through January 1, daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., extending to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Visitors can enjoy the holiday decorations free of charge.
