US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that one of the two National Guard members shot near the White House the previous day has succumbed to her injuries. "She was brutally attacked and has passed away," Trump stated regarding the 20-year-old woman from the West Virginia National Guard.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when two National Guard members were on duty near the Farragut West metro station in Washington, close to the White House, and came under gunfire.
Trump added that the second guard member, a 24-year-old man, remains in critical condition.
The shooting took place around 2:15 pm (1915 GMT) near the metro station. Metropolitan Police Department Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll reported that the lone suspect had been restrained by fellow National Guard personnel, arrested, and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities have identified the suspect as a 29-year-old Afghan national who resided in Bellingham, Washington, with his spouse and five children. According to US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, he traveled across the country to reach Washington, D.C., before carrying out the attack.
The suspect allegedly used a revolver and could face 15 years in prison for assault with intent to kill while armed, Pirro noted, emphasizing that this is an initial evaluation. The motive behind the attack remains undetermined.
President Trump described the shooting as an "act of terror."

The death of the 20-year-old National Guard member is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities even in highly secured areas. While authorities acted quickly to restrain the suspect, the incident underscores the persistent risk posed by individuals willing to commit violent acts in public spaces.
President Trump's characterization of the shooting as an "act of terror" reflects the gravity of the situation, though investigators have not yet established a clear motive. The suspect, a 29-year-old Afghan national, traveled across the country before carrying out the attack, which raises questions about planning and intent.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the recovery of the second guard member, currently in critical condition, and the legal proceedings that may follow. This event will likely prompt a review of security protocols around key federal sites and reinforce the need for vigilance among personnel on duty.
