Trump plans to grant pardon to former Honduran president Hernandez

On November 28, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to grant a full pardon to ex-Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernndez, who was convicted in a United States court for trafficking drugs. Trump shared the news on Truth Social, stating that Hernndez was treated unfairly and harshly, according to many respected voices.

In the same post, Trump expressed support for a conservative candidate in the upcoming Honduran elections. He endorsed Tito Asfura, a member of the National Party, the same political party Hernndez once led.

Hernndez was convicted in March 2024 in a U.S. court for conspiring to import cocaine into the United States. He served as Honduras president from 2014 until 2022 and was extradited to the U.S. in April 2022. A U.S. judge sentenced him to 45 years in prison, citing his leadership of a narco-state responsible for sending South American cocaine into the U.S.

Prosecutors detailed that Hernndez built his political career through millions of dollars in bribes from traffickers in Honduras and Mexico. They also reported that he facilitated the transport of at least 400 tons of cocaine to the U.S. and shielded traffickers from extradition and prosecution.

Trump highlighted his backing of Asfura, saying that if Asfura wins, the United States will strongly support his policies and work with him to maximize Honduras political and financial success. Trump emphasized that a wrong leader could have catastrophic consequences for any country.

Trump concluded his message by congratulating Hernndez on the upcoming pardon and encouraging Hondurans to vote for Asfura, urging the slogan Make Honduras Great Again. Earlier, Trump described the Honduran opposition as Narcoterrorists, likening them to Venezuelas Nicolas Maduro, and emphasized his intent to collaborate with Asfura to fight Narcocommunists and provide aid to Hondurans.

Author’s Analysis: Implications of Trump’s Pardon for Honduras

The announcement by former President Donald Trump to pardon Juan Orlando Hernández marks a highly unusual intervention in Central American politics. Hernández, convicted in a U.S. court for trafficking hundreds of tons of cocaine, faces a 45-year sentence for orchestrating what prosecutors described as a “narco-state.” The pardon bypasses decades of legal precedent, raising questions about accountability and international cooperation in anti-drug efforts.

Trump’s simultaneous endorsement of Tito Asfura in the upcoming Honduran elections links U.S. political influence directly to domestic Honduran contests. By framing Asfura as a continuation of Hernández’s policies, Trump positions the pardon as both a legal relief for Hernández and a strategic political maneuver intended to shape Honduras’ leadership.

The move could have broad regional consequences. It risks undermining U.S. credibility in promoting rule of law while signaling tolerance for corruption-linked political networks. Analysts should watch how Honduran voters respond, how regional governments react, and whether U.S.-Honduras relations shift toward prioritizing political alignment over judicial accountability.
