Trump receives increasing backlash for referring to Somali immigrants as 'garbage'

President Trump is encountering growing backlash for his remarks targeting Somali immigrants, particularly in Minnesota. Recently, he criticized the Somali community, claiming that "hundreds of thousands of refugees from Somalia are completely taking over the once great State of Minnesota."

During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump directed personal attacks at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), labeling her as garbage. He added that he did not want Somali immigrants in the United States, and made derogatory remarks about Somalia.

Responding on the social media platform X, Omar stated, His obsession with me is creepy. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs. She also told NewsNation that neither she nor the Somali community would be intimidated or scapegoated.

According to the Census Bureau, roughly 260,000 Americans of Somali descent resided in the U.S. in 2024. Minneapolis, Minnesotas largest city, is home to around 84,000 Somali residents, the majority of whom are U.S. citizens.

The editorial board of The Minnesota Star Tribune criticized Trumps statements, emphasizing that Minnesota hosts the nations largest Somali community, which includes colleagues, neighbors, public servants, and taxpayers. The board described his comments as dangerous and reprehensible.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) said Trump was unfairly demonizing Somali residents, highlighting their contributions as educators, doctors, artists, and entrepreneurs, which enrich the states diversity and energy.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) also condemned the presidents remarks, stressing that the Somali community should not be blamed for the actions of a few individuals.

Reports indicate that the Trump administration plans to focus upcoming immigration actions on Somali residents in Minnesota. When contacted, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson defended Trumps statements, asserting he was justified in highlighting issues caused by Somali immigrants, describing them as radical.
