President Donald Trump, 79, hinted at the possibility of more buildings carrying his name during a Thursday event at the Institute of Peace. You have a big event on Friday at the Trump Kennedy Center, he said, quickly correcting himself. Oh, excuse me, at the Kennedy Center. The audience laughed at the slip, as Trump added, Pardon me, such a terrible mistake.

Trump made the remark while noting that FIFAs president was present ahead of the World Cup 2026 Final Draw scheduled at the center in Washington, also highlighting strong ticket sales for the event.

This is not the first time Trump has joked about renaming the Kennedy Center. In August, he posted on Truth Social about the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS.

Earlier this year, shortly after beginning his second term, Trump announced plans to remove certain members of the Kennedy Centers board and declared himself chairman in February. On Thursday, while speaking at the Institute of Peace, Trump referenced the recent addition of his name to the buildings signage. This morning, the State Department renamed the former Institute of Peace to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nations history, a post shared by the department said, showing the new Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace sign.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also praised Trump, calling him the President of Peace. Trump, visibly pleased with the change, remarked, This is a nice building, I have to tell you. This is a special occasion for many reasons, but number one, its our first occasion in this building using it for peace, and its all about peace.

Later, Trump thanked Rubio directly for the renaming. And thank you for putting a certain name on that building, he said. Its a great honor. Really, a great honor. Thank you very much.

The Institute, created by Congress in 1984, has been targeted by the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for restructuring since the start of Trumps second term. Despite his name now appearing on the building, legal disputes over control of the organization continue. Trump has also expressed interest in having the Washington Commanders name their planned stadium after him, which the White House described as a beautiful name.

Analysis: Trump’s Continued Branding Efforts and Influence

President Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding the potential renaming of more public institutions in his honor signal an ongoing attempt to solidify his legacy through branding. During a Thursday event at the Institute of Peace, Trump casually mentioned a possible name change for the Kennedy Center, which was met with laughter from the audience. However, this remark may be more than just a joke; it is part of a broader pattern of Trump leveraging his name for commercial and political influence.

His assertion that the State Department renamed the Institute of Peace to the "Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace" is another example of how Trump seeks to associate his persona with prestigious institutions. The renaming of the building was highlighted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who called Trump the "President of Peace." This move, though symbolic, underscores the alignment of the Trump administration’s priorities with personal branding and influence over national symbols.

Furthermore, Trump’s recent actions toward the Kennedy Center are not isolated incidents. His prior suggestion to rename the prestigious institution on Truth Social and his push to restructure the Kennedy Center’s board reflect his continuing interest in reshaping cultural and governmental institutions to better reflect his image. The growing number of locations bearing his name could signal a wider strategy to embed his legacy within the nation's cultural landscape.

As the legal battles continue over control of these institutions, it remains to be seen how far Trump will go in pushing his personal brand into the public sphere. The ongoing disputes, particularly regarding the Institute of Peace, indicate that this is more than a superficial matter—it is a politically charged effort to secure a legacy that aligns with Trump’s vision of governance and public perception.
