Texas Congressman Troy Nehls (R) revealed on Saturday that he will not run for reelection in next years midterms, choosing instead to focus on his family. In a statement shared on X, Nehls said, After more than 30 years in law enforcementincluding roles as a police officer, constable, Fort Bend County Sheriff, Army veteran, and six years representing this district in CongressI have decided, after discussions with my wife and daughters over Thanksgiving, to dedicate my time to family and return home after this Congress.
Nehls, first elected to represent Texas 22nd district in 2020, noted that he personally informed former President Trump before making the announcement. President Trump has always been a strong supporter of our district and a true friend, and I wanted him to hear this from me directly, Nehls added. Serving in the military, law enforcement, and Congress has been the greatest honor of my life.
The Congressman expressed gratitude to his constituents, saying, Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your prayers. Nehls has been a vocal advocate for stricter immigration policies, recently advancing legislation in the House Judiciary Committee aimed at easing deportation processes for undocumented immigrants. A comparable bill has been introduced in the Senate by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.).
Previously, Nehls left the House Freedom Caucus amid internal disagreements and co-sponsored legislation with Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) to redesign the $100 bill to honor a president. His military background includes service in the U.S. Army Reserves with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, retiring after more than 20 years with two Bronze Star medals.
Following his military career, Nehls pursued law enforcement before entering politics. His decision to step down places him among several Republican lawmakers opting to leave Congress or seek other offices, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who announced she would resign in January amid tensions with Trump.
Analysis: Rep. Troy Nehls' Decision to Step Down
Texas Congressman Troy Nehls’ announcement that he will not seek reelection in the 2024 midterms comes as a notable shift in the political landscape of the 22nd district. After over three decades of service in law enforcement and military, and six years representing his constituents in Congress, Nehls has opted to prioritize family, a decision made after discussions with his wife and daughters during Thanksgiving. This personal choice reflects a broader trend where several Republican lawmakers are reassessing their future political careers.
Nehls’ decision also highlights the role of personal circumstances in shaping political careers, particularly after extended periods in public service. While the move is seen as a reflection of his commitment to family, it also comes at a time when Republican lawmakers like Marjorie Taylor Greene have made similar decisions, with Greene choosing to resign amid tensions with former President Trump. Nehls, who had been a vocal advocate for stricter immigration policies, including legislation aimed at simplifying deportation processes for undocumented immigrants, will leave behind a significant legacy of public service. His military service and leadership in law enforcement shaped his legislative priorities, which will no longer be part of the legislative agenda moving forward.
In addition, Nehls’ relationship with former President Trump is noteworthy. The Congressman made sure to personally inform Trump before making the announcement, further emphasizing the personal nature of his decision. While Nehls' exit will leave a void in Texas politics, his move to focus on family should not be seen as an end to his public service, but rather a new chapter. His absence from Congress opens up opportunities for fresh leadership, and it will be interesting to see who steps in to represent the 22nd district in the future.
