In a late-night post on social media, former President Donald Trump criticized Colorado Governor Jared Polis for keeping Tina Peters, the former Mesa County election clerk, in prison. Trump referred to Polis as a "lightweight" and claimed the governor has allowed the state to deteriorate. He demanded her immediate release, writing, "FREE TINA!"

Peters was convicted in August 2024 of election-related offenses. Prosecutors said she stole a county employees security badge in May 2021 to enable a man to access voter systems, supporting MyPillow CEO Mike Lindells unfounded claims regarding the 2020 presidential election. She was found guilty on seven counts, including four felonies, and received a nine-year prison sentence.

Last month, the Colorado Department of Corrections declined a Federal Bureau of Prisons request to transfer Peters to federal custody, a decision that ultimately rests with Governor Polis.

Trump further labeled Polis a SLEAZEBAG and criticized him for not releasing Peters, describing her as an elderly cancer survivor who was fulfilling her duty to preserve election records under federal law. He asserted that her conviction was unjust compared to alleged Democratic misconduct in elections.

Trump also referenced Tren de Aragua, mentioning federal action against members of the Venezuelan gang during an April raid at a Colorado Springs nightclub.

Analysis of Trump's Criticism of Governor Polis Over Tina Peters' Incarceration

In his latest social media post, former President Donald Trump has strongly criticized Colorado Governor Jared Polis for maintaining the imprisonment of Tina Peters, the former Mesa County election clerk. Trump's remarks, which called Polis a "lightweight" and a "sleazebag," come after Peters was sentenced to nine years in prison following her conviction on election-related charges. Her case has sparked heated debate, particularly over her role in advancing conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 presidential election.

Trump’s call for Peters’ immediate release underscores his belief that the criminal justice system has been unjustly applied to her, especially when compared to what he claims are instances of misconduct by Democrats in election matters. Peters, convicted of stealing a county employee's security badge to access voter systems, has been a controversial figure in the wake of the 2020 election, with some viewing her as a martyr for election integrity, while others regard her actions as illegal and damaging to public trust in the electoral system.

Governor Polis’ decision to keep Peters incarcerated and deny her transfer to federal custody, despite a request from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, has become a point of contention. In addition to her conviction, Peters’ health condition—being a cancer survivor—has also been highlighted by Trump as a reason for her immediate release. This case has turned into a political flashpoint, with Trump and his supporters framing it as an example of perceived injustice, while others argue that the conviction was warranted and serves as a necessary deterrent against election-related crimes.

The broader implications of this case involve questions about the role of political figures in shaping legal outcomes, the perceived politicization of the judicial system, and the ongoing battle over the legitimacy of the 2020 election. As of now, the situation remains unresolved, and it appears likely to continue being a divisive issue in Colorado politics and beyond.
