Former President Donald Trump has unveiled his latest focus in Washington D.C., announcing plans to cleanse the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool of what he described as Biden filth and incompetence.
Trump shared a video on social media outlining his intention to restore the historic pool, reportedly with assistance from Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. The short, 30-second clip shows leaves and debris floating in the water, paired with Andrea Bocellis Time to Say Goodbye. The footage also highlights a caution sign advising visitors to avoid the water, along with pool maintenance workers cleaning its murky, green surface.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: This is the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool before Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and I fix it. Study it hard because you wont be seeing this Biden filth and incompetence much longer! The video was captioned with the slogan Make D.C. Beautiful Again.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, completed in 1923, is the largest in Washington D.C. and one of the citys most recognized landmarks. It has been the backdrop for historic moments, including Martin Luther King Jr.s I Have a Dream speech. According to the National Park Service, approximately 8.5 million visitors explored the site last year.
While specific plans for the pool remain unclear, Trumps second term has seen a pattern of major alterations to iconic locations. Recently, he authorized the demolition of the White House East Wing to construct a $300 million ballroom, claiming it fulfilled a longstanding presidential aspiration.
Trump explained the demolition on The Ingraham Angle, stating, I couldve built the ballroom around it. I didnt want to sacrifice a great ballroom for an okay ballroom by leaving it right smack in the middle. The project was funded by private investors.
Additionally, Trump has announced intentions to erect a massive Arc de Triomphe-style arch opposite the Lincoln Memorial, repave Jackie Kennedys rose garden, and add golden features to the Oval Office.
The Independent has reached out to the White House and the Department of the Interior for statements regarding these plans.
Analysis: Trump's Vision for D.C.'s Iconic Landmarks
Former President Donald Trump's recent announcement to "cleanse" the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool of what he describes as “Biden filth and incompetence” has ignited a wave of discussion. In a short video shared on social media, Trump showcases the pool’s current state, filled with debris and caution signs, and signals his intent to restore it with the help of Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. The accompanying slogan, "Make D.C. Beautiful Again," mirrors the broader theme of Trump's ongoing renovation efforts throughout Washington D.C.
While specifics about the pool’s restoration remain unclear, the video serves as part of a larger narrative where Trump has pursued the alteration of iconic U.S. landmarks. Notably, his recent approval of a $300 million ballroom project at the White House, replacing the East Wing, signals a trend of substantial changes to historic sites. His planned Arc de Triomphe-style arch, improvements to Jackie Kennedy’s rose garden, and proposed modifications to the Oval Office all point to a presidential agenda focused on physical transformations of symbols of American history.
Critics have raised concerns about the motivations behind these modifications. However, Trump's supporters argue that such changes are necessary to restore grandeur and ensure that Washington D.C. remains a reflection of American ideals. The focus on aesthetic improvements may also resonate with those who favor bold, visible actions, particularly in contrast to the ongoing political debates over governance and policy. Yet, as with any significant project involving public landmarks, the balance between preservation and change remains a crucial issue.
Trump’s vision for D.C. could redefine the city’s architectural landscape in the years to come. Whether these plans will be realized fully or face public resistance remains to be seen. As with many of his previous undertakings, this latest endeavor will likely be a topic of debate, not just for its scope but for its symbolic value as well.
